Mongrelcat, You think it would have been different if Cov. Cath would have had a pocket passing quarterback when the offensive line wasn’t able to stop the defense ? Harney , last year, had a total of (2) interceptions for the entire year, playing against Ryle 6A and is supposedly ranked second in the state, maybe it should of been a running clock situation Friday night. Ryle is going to beat a lot of their opponents this year, maybe you have the answers you can pass on to their opponents to help them out !

I think Ryle wins that game 10 out of 10 times, with a different QB or not. All I stated was w/ a traditional QB, they’d be harder to defend. To your point, if Ryle is controlling the LOS, then they’re winning regardless. Just a bad head to head matchup for CCHS but I think their staff did about everything they can do to give them a chance and deserve credit for doing so.

Congrats to Ryle. Dylan Lee was fantastic with 2 key interceptions and Jacob Savage fought through cramps. Dameyn Anness is a blessing coming over from Ludlow to spell Savage at RB. Ryle controlled th

What is your comparison of Harney and Verax?

Verax is a better passer of the ball. Both are very dangerous in the open field as runners. Verax has amazing speed (10.9 100 meter) and Harney isn’t probably too far behind from what I can see. Both have come up big in big games in their careers.

Harney is more of a wildcat QB IMO. His downfield balls lack zip and he eyes his receiver too long (just watch Lee’s pick on  first series).

Both are great HS QB’s but I’d take Verax all day. He’s 2-0 vs Harney, more accurate passer downfield, and is just as good of runner w/ more speed.

Can we talk about how scared EE has been to pass the ball with Cash at QB? Felt like the whole night was Cash left, Cash right, Gaiser left, Gaiser right, screen pass to Gaiser. Let's talk about the fact that Owen Pitzer (he's the one with D1 offers, Eddie) only had 2 freakin offensive touches. How about our 6-6 wideout Donovan Bradshaw who's taller than every player on Ryle's roster? We passed to him 3 times for 3 catches and 3 first downs but then just reverted for the rest of the game to running Cash and Gaiser and not even thinking about Pitzer. I know I know, last year it went pretty good doing that. But really can we talk about how uninspired EE's offensive plan is?

And can we talk about the fact that we insist on having our starting qb play both ways and how EE forces him to run over to the sideline to personally get the playcall and then run back with it to the huddle every damn play? 35 or 40 plays offensive plays a game, Cash is easily running an extra 1000 or more yards each game just to get the stupid playcall. How about sending your play in with a different wr or rb like basically every other coach does instead of wearing out your qb with completely unnecessary running, Eddie? Instead we were down 2 scores with 9 mins left and EE is running down the play clock having Cash run back and forth from the sideline to get the play. Do we even have a hurry up offense at all? Like seriously do we? I don't think I've ever seen us run a 2 minute offense under EE. We needed scores and last night we were completely incapable of getting any plays off until the back judge had counted down to 5 or less seconds every play.

I agree 100% with this. Definately no vertical game threat with Cash not being able to throw 10 yards down the field. Don't get me wrong, Cash is a good athlete but I like them 6ft4in QB's that can throw down field easily 20-40 yards. Kind of like AJ Mayer or Pitzer a few years ago.

JV game was 30-7 CovCath.

100%!  Can't be so obviously one-dimensional and beat good / great teams.  Will be interesting to see how the CovCath community feels if Queen has a huge year at Beechwood and he could have been in Park Hills handing it and throwing it to Cash, Dylan, and the rest of those weapons.

I think Queen will have a pretty big year (and likely be better than Cash), but I don't fault Coach Eviston for playing it the way that he did. Cash gave them the better shot to win last year and it's hard to beat out an incumbent starter coming off a nice year. I don't blame Queen for transferring either to get playing time.

Dylan Courtney - Cov Cath sophomore QB - having some really nice traits makes this fine for Cov Cath as I think he'll develop into a well above average starter in 26 and 27.

Losing to the reigning 6A runner with 16 returning starters, including a P4 player, while losing the turnover battle by 3 is not the worst thing to happen. A few tweaks - like a few more called vertical shots on offense - and I think they'll be fine.

- Losing the turnover battle by 3, having a bunch of penalties and getting outplayed in the kicking game is a good way to make sure you lose.

- The size difference on the line of scrimmage was notable. I felt bad for our RT who is not a lineman but stuck there.

- Cov Cath offense is really compressed right now. There’s really no threat vertically or in the drop back game unfortunately.

- Cash and Gaiser have a ton of juice and made some great plays tonight. They’ll put up a ton of production this year.

- Is Brandon Smith number 19? Yeah that’s going to be a real player. Size and movement skills!

What I couldn't tell was if Ryle's O and D lines are that good or if CCH's need that much work.

Good for Queen if he does. That is how they will feel. This O line I do not think is any better than last years and he was terrified in the pocket last year.  Unless he throw quick short passes to Fryman could be more of the same at beechwood.

Thanks for responding. It didn't matter because these were the middle linebackers for about 7 years:

Kam Butler - 4 year starter at the FBS level - 240lbs

Michael Mayer - NFL player - 240 lbs

Aiden Jones - currently at West Point - 240 lbs

I really like our guys now but they're more of an athlete than super physical and cleaning up between the tackles and beating up on offensive linemen like these three guys. They gave up 290 yards on the ground to Highlands last year and similar last night to Ryle. It's probably going to be the same against the three above listed teams.

I do agree that lack of a threatening passing game is also a big issue against similarly talented teams.

They have a sophmore at LB this year. Yikes

I think Ryle's lines are pretty good. Their tackles are both 6'5 and over 300 lbs. Their interior is all over 250 lbs too.

They ran a ton of inside zone and those tackles just wash down the 4i's in a tite front - Savage hits behind it and is a load running downhill behind his pads. Verax's speed is an issue and holds the C gap player long enough for it to pop.

Their DL is nice too. 15 is a stud and 0 is a good player as well.

Cash Myers is a good player, I think he'll hold his own vs most teams. Really talented athlete.

I am not saying he isn't. Just young and Varsity game speed moves quicker than freshman game speed.

Nobody got washed anywhere... that is the SCHEME... they slant gaps on every play.  That leaves the LB's to come down hill to make plays.  Young LB group with a ton of talent who will get better but way too many missed tackles particularly when they weren't accounted for.

Also, Ryle is an excellent team.  The Ryle/Highlands game will be a great barometer for where these programs stand.

You very rarely actually see teams these days do what you mentioned, in regards to coaches sending in their plays with a different player.

I wasn't at the game, but usually when you play a team that is better than you (Which Ryle is), shortening the game helps. Which CovCath lost to possibly the second best team in the whole state by 6 points. Which that game plan also allowed them to beat a team in Boyle County last year, that no one in the state really saw coming. Does CovCath have to improve their passing game? Absolutely, however some of the stuff you are complaining about. May have actually helped them keep this game close, as Ryle simply is the better team.

Can you describe to me how you are supposed to fit inside and outside zone in a tite front? You sound a lot more familiar with it than me.  There were probably 3 to 5 big gains hitting in the backside B gap (good vision by the Ryle backs too).

It's not my scheme... but you have identified the number one weakness in what CCH runs.  Inside outside zone.  I think your question assumes (correctly) that everyone has a gap responsibility or run fit on each play.  While it appears the d line stunt to a certain gap on each play call, the linebackers either fill the vacated gap or read and fast flow to the play.  I am not sure about you, but I wouldn't necessary call that a run fit or gap controlled defense like we probably ran growing up.  The backside B gap runs are a perfect example... yes, great read by the back because they see the backside d lineman cross the o lineman's face as they are supposed to do in this slant scheme.  In this scheme, the backside backer then should be free (and many times, if not all) they were.  At that point you take your hat off to Savage and the other kid because they are hitting those holes like dudes.  Tough to be ready for that kind of speed and it certainly showed the first quarter and a half.

Ryle’s Oline did an excellent job of zone blocking so Ryle’s running backs were just stringing along to the left or right and hit the first opening that they seen.  Easily gaining 3 to 4 before getting touched.
