Both teams had key players out. When Ryle “starters” were on the field, I had the score 27-0. I’m sure Fryman would have made a big difference but so would Verax running the ball, which he couldn’t do tonight.
Good luck to Beechwood. I’m sure they’ll do their thing in 2A this year.

That seals it. Ryle wins big!

  • I know, quoting myself but after a lot of thought I feel the same way.  In a real game this probably would have been a Ryle running clock or close to one.  Before anyone from Beechwood gets fired up a

  • Because he’s 6’3, 215 with a strong arm and clean mechanics. Colleges care very little about high school production.

Suuure. If ifs and buts ... Hey, that means Beechwood won the rest of the scrimmage with partial starters playing for each 17-7, right?

Whatever, it's a first scrimmage. It is about getting some live reps in before the real stuff happens and trying some things out. Getting looks at different players against solid competition. Both teams will play better in a couple weeks than they did tonight.

Two players were super impressive - Savage for Ryle and Pabst for Beechwood. The talent of those two was obvious. They will have great seasons.

Also, place kickers for both teams were very good. Kickoffs well into the end zone and long field goals.

Huh? Just providing some insight. Not sure if Beechwood had all their starters in when Ryle did because I don’t know their team. Just stating facts. When Ryle had starters in on O and D they won 27-0.

Beechwood looked good. Definitely not as good as last year but with the addition of Fryman should hava a good shot at another chip.

Got it. As you say, Fryman didn't play, so Beechwood didn't have all their starters in for a single play all night. Right? So Ryle with all their starters won 27-0 when Beechwood was missing starters. And Beechwood won 17-7 when both teams were missing starters.

The best player in NKY makes a huge difference!

Almost, but you missed a key point. Ryle was missing starters too so technically Ryle won 27-0 w/out all their starters vs Beechwood minus Fryman.

Let’s be real, that’s most likely a lopsided running clock game w/ all the starters. I appreciate your love for your team but Ryle has way too much size and too many weapons for this year’s Beechwood team.

As great as Fryman is, and he’s one of the best, he’s about 0-10 vs that team dating back to youth. I didn’t see anything today to make me think this year would be any different.

Yes, let's be real. I'll give a complete, detailed breakdown for everyone.

First of all, it is the first scrimmage. About 50% of what we saw last night relates to what would happen if these two played in season this year. Ryle returns 16 of 22 starters. Beechwood has a new QB, a new RB, a new OL. Ryle should be way ahead of Beechwood at the first scrimmage. Here is how I saw the action last night, and I will factor in your comments that Ryle only played starters part of the night. I don't know Ryle well enough to know for sure when the "real" team was on the field and when it wasn't. But I will give it a try here.

First half of the scrimmage was each team running 10 play series. I am going to guess both teams played their "real teams" on their first 10 play series. Beechwood got a couple first downs and no score on their first 10 plays. Ryle got a couple first downs then kicked a 39 yard field goal. So "Real Ryle" leads "Real BW" 3-0.

In the next two 10 play series, Ryle probably started playing other guys. It looked a little like that. I know Savage sat out plays. In those 40 plays, each team scored a TD. But we won't use those 40 plays because it was not the real Ryle starters. So 7-7 in this series, but not the "real" teams playing so throw these scores out.

After the JV action, each team came back a ran a goal line series from the 10. Ryle scored and BW didn't. 7-0 Ryle and I will assume it was "real" but it was one goal line situation series for each team. Take that for what you want.

Then we got to the most real stuff of the night. Timed live action. Did Ryle have their "real team" on the field? It looked like they did to me. BW's first possession, TD pass to Pabst. Please do not try to tell me Ryle didn't have their "real team" on the field at the start of real timed play. Ryle came right back and moved the ball pretty easily down field for a TD. 7-7 in this part of the scrimmage with what looked like real players to me. Next possession, BW fumble. Ryle could not convert the short field to a TD and kicked a 40 yard FG. Ryle 10-7. Next possession BW went 3 and out. Ryle scored a TD. Make it 17-7 Ryle.

At this point, it is still timed live action but it looked like Ryle started mixing in some other players. BW moved the ball down field, threw a TD pass that was called back because of holding. Then settled for a 45 yard field goal. We won't add those 3 points to the "real" score though. End of varsity scrimmage.

Based on what looks like play with the "real teams", that gets me to Ryle 20 BW 7. If you want to add the goal line series, Ryle 27 Beechwood 7. Total overall score of all play was 34-17.

Look at it however you want from that breakdown.

Good recap as usual by VOR. This was a good scrimmage by two good programs. Savage is outstanding. Both teams have excellent placekickers that have 50+ yard legs for FGs and opposing teams will normally start at the 20 due to touchbacks. Tigers struggled with punting, but I'm sure that will improve over the year. Verax will be a containment problem for defenses when he needs to scramble. Queen has a good arm and will continue to  get better. Both teams have the shot at playing for a state title again this year. It was an enjoyable night and beneficial to both teams, which is the goal of a scrimmage.

Ryle did not have their starters on the Pabst long TD play. He was being guarded by a 3rd string player. Also, Bo Gay clearly tagged the QB before he threw that ball. Should have been dead. On the flip side, Verax threw a wide open TD they blew dead I guess for a 5 second count?? Not sure what happened there.

I don’t think Ryle looked great at all. Plenty to clean up but just providing context to conversation. To your point, Ryle scored all their points w/out Fryman. Beechwood scored all their points w/ out Ryle’s starting LB and Safety. But when Ryle “starting O and D” were on the field it was 27-0. The final quarter was 17-0.

More importantly to the discussion, Ryle could have pounding Savage and Anness all day and there would have been very little Beechwood could have done about it. Too big and strong. Add Verax to Lee combo and Verax’s running ability. It would get ugly fast.

Ryle also forced 2 turnovers, one pick that would have lead to more points but due to 10 play format, ball went back to beechwood.

Running clock game.
