Someone told me Luke Maile was offered the job.  But he has a $760,000 one-year deal with Kansas City right now.

It's a little bit of "telephone" but I spoke to a NKY baseball coach whose word I trust, and he was told by an assistant on Bill Krumpelbeck's staff that he was informed of his retirement, so to speak

I believe Rob Wermeling down at Holy Cross is extremely interested in the job. He played for Coach Krumpelbeck back around the time that CCH had Todd Etler and I believe one or two other guys who spen

No problem. CCH can compete with that.

In all seriousness one of the issues Ky. schools have, especially in baseball where the salaries are awful for coaches, is competing with Ohio schools.  An assistant coach in Ohio will most times make way more in their coaching stipend than a head coach in Ky.  Kentucky baseball coaches stipends are borderline embarrassing.  Now a private school can have more wiggle room as it does not have to play by a district salary schedule or deal with unions but its still not comparing to Ohio.

I could see where they might take a flyer and go ahead and ask him with the attitude that "the worst thing that happens is he says no," but I don't see a world where the school realistically expected to land Luke as coach while he still has any shot at continuing his MLB career.

I believe Coach Krumps' longtime assistant and JV coach John Michels did apply for the job. I wouldn't mind seeing him get the job at all. But I agree with @The Oracle that the thing he has fighting against him is the fact that there were baseball players opting to go to other high schools in order to avoid having to play for Coach Krumps for the last handful of years, and because of that the administrators may be wanting to go in an entirely different direction as far as coaching goes.

In the course of probably 15 or so conversations I think I've heard basically every varsity and JV coach in Northern Kentucky named as someone "Cov Cath is reaching out to," but I figure the list is probably more like 4-6 people. Bacigalupo typically plays things pretty close to the chest, so especially being the summer when there aren't many folks up around school day to day, I don't think we hear much news until the hire has been made.

There's also an assistant over at X that's being talked about. He's married into a CCH family but having GCL South pedigree has to look good to Bob & Tony.

Omar Velazquez. He's married into the Popham family, which is "a CCH family," but Shane was the last Popham to go to Cov Cath, and he gradated back in 2007.

I'm not sure how hot or cold the athletic department is on Velazquez, but I've heard his name mentioned quite a few times. He's a varsity assistant for the Bombers.

I have seen Omar in action and if I am CCH, I do not want him guiding the program but that's just me. What I hear is that they are missing the boat on some qualified outside the box thinking folks who would make a BIG Impact. Plus. I am pretty sure from what I hear form a respected coach that they had a list of 1 and Gray said no.  After that they had nothing. This is being botched just like the handling of the basketball coach when people were complaining about him.

Is this a job that would get Brad Arlinghaus back into coaching? Cov Cath Grad, won a ton of games at Connor. I know he quit to spend more time with his kids, but I think he'd be at least on the radar.

I could easily be wrong but I don't feel he would be interested for the same reasons he left Conner. His young kids.

Personally I don't know Velasquez from Adam and I haven't ever seen him coach, so I'll take your word for that. But I do know Bacigalupo well enough to know that he definitely would have more than one coach in mind to approach about the job - especially if Coach Krumps' retirement "plan" came from the athletic department, and especially if the #1 coach on Baci's list was already very happily dug into a coaching position elsewhere. My understanding is that you are right about Kevin Gray being their #1 get, but I think, almost as much as Maile would be, that they would have been asking him expecting his answer to be no.

Care to tell who the qualified outside the box thinkers you mentioned are, though?

For their privacy I would rather not share those names. Both played in collge and both were drafted. One is from this area the other is not. This is being screwed up!

You were provided incorrect information.

I like these CovCath threads.

Omar did some really good things coaching and player development at the Reds RBI Academy.  But....is CovCath in the position they hire an assistant coach unless its from within?   I am thinking not.

I am going to toss this out here and please nobody take offense to this because I do not know the assistant coaches at all at Covington Catholic.  And really this goes for any school that is in this situation.

If Covington Catholic is expecting "long time" assistant coaches to be kept on the staff, this can be a deal breaker.  Let me explain.  If Coach #1 has been an assistant to Coach Krumps for a long time and the athletic department forces a retirement and does not hire Coach #1 as the new head coach but brings someone in from the outside but requires the new head coach to keep Coach #1 on staff, is this really a healthy situation in the coaches room?  I am saying no its not.  As an established head coach being offered this position, I would not take it if I had to keep assistant coaches on board unless I really had the opportunity to sit down with them and establish roles, etc. for Coach #1 along with my staff I am bringing with me.

Just tossing this out there........
