There's ALWAYS a reason. You may not agree with or really even know what the reason is. But there is certainly a reason.

Hopefully they don't lose the returning boys basketball talent they do have.

The best way to judge any faculty problems with the principal is to look at teacher turnover. Boys basketball is a small part of the overall school program. I would imagine there will be some good candidates for the job. Will be interesting to see if they consider a coach who is not on their teaching staff.

Do you know of any staff there right now that could be candidates? Maybe the principal has already had his on eye on somebody since last year when he originally spoke to Sully about the non renewal. He has had an unprecedented amount of time to think this through.

And you say this because.....? The school program and TOTAL athletic program seem to be pretty good. Test scores seem to be on par or better in comparison to the entire district and the athletic program had football, boys basketball, girls basketball, and several other sports do well. State champions in boys cross country and girls bowling. As I understand this was not a spur of the moment decision but was in response to previous and ongoing situations.

Firing the basketball coach for no reason.

I would think you would find that the principal makes the final decision and apparently the superintendent was in agreement. I would also tell you that the decision was probably made after a great deal of documentation and observation. I think the principal and AD have been there since the school opened as has Mr. Sullivan.

I have no idea if he would want to make the switch. However, I think a home run hire for Cooper is already in the building if he is interested. That is Cooper’s girls coach Justin Holthaus. He is one of the best basketball coaches in the state on the girls side, and also coached under Sullivan on the boys side before getting the Cooper girls job.

Now obviously leaving the loaded girls team he has coming back would be a difficult decision.  However, if he did make the switch I think he would do a great job and the boys would continue being a top team for years to come. While on the flip side, with such a loaded roster coming back on the girls side. It wouldn’t matter that the job was opening up this late. They would get probably all kinds of top coaches willing to leave still this late to come coach that loaded girls roster.

Came here to say the same thing. If I was Cooper's AD the first place I would go is across the gym to the girls side and try and lure Coach Holthaus to the boys side. If I remember correctly, he interviewed for the Conner Boys Basketball position last year, so it seems like he has interest in coaching boys basketball.

After that, I don't even know where to start with potential candidates. They should get some strong interest in the position - Coach Sully built them into a 9th region contender almost every year the last 10 years, give or take.

I just checked Boone County Schools website for job posting and there are 10 openings, but none for Cooper Basketball.

What could be the hold up?

I don't know if they will. Think about it, would you want to be tasked with replacing Coach Sullivan after this mess? They may need to go down south or elsewhere to find someone willing to take over the reins.

Yes and no. Obviously with all this talk on this situation, could make a few folks pause for a minute. On the flip side I do think many will still look at it as a good opportunity. like it is a successful big school, in what is still a growing area with subdivisions around the school. So you will still get talented players coming in. Plus no matter how this ended, people really can’t say the support isn’t there. They just had a bball coach for 16 years, so obviously the support was there the majority of the time for a coach to last 16 years at one place in today’s environment. Obviously something changed in the last year or two that changed that relationship that led to this. However, overall looking at this job you have to feel like based on history that you will get the support and time needed to do this job too.

As for this job, as mentioned Justin Holthaus would be a home run hire. If he isn’t interested in making the switch. I think a name that could be interesting that would also be a great hire and would be available and in the area if he wants to coach again is Scott Ruthsatz. Which is another one that I don’t think we will truly ever know the full reasons why he and Covcath split. However, much like St. Henry getting Sullivan after this. Cooper getting him would be a great hire too.

If the same kind of talent ends up at Cooper they will be just fine regardless of who they hire.  High School coach searches are some of the most comical exercises undertaken each year.  Especially for a public school who in theory can control who attends the school.

In short, if they have the best collection of 6-8 players on varsity you could almost hire a loaf of rye bread to coach.  I am aware of the ridiculous nature of that last comment.  Said for dramatic effect
