If the kid misses the free throws, which was the intent of the foul in the first place, then it remains a tie game and is West’s ball with a chance to win.

And correct me if I’m wrong, the kid surprised folks by making those two free throws(the appropriate way to answer an intentional foul, and then SW forced the ball into the hands of the kid they wanted to shoot, correct?

So you say it was one of the dumbest intentional fouls ever instead of giving SW credit for overcoming strategy and winning the game.

Interesting take.

Yes and I will stand by that. You don't foul to intentionally give a team an oppurtunity to beat you. I don't care if you are fouling Shaq.

If teams stay the same as they ended last season(which we know they won’t), my top 5 would look a little different. The top teams from last year all have major holes to fill. DCA has no one on that ro

Good stuff. For the sake of the West/SW argument, this chart in the article is the one that matters. I have no idea what the pre-game win probability was. West Jessamine had a better record, but Southwestern had beat the Colts by 16 in early January.

Based on their late season games I'd guess that it would be in the 50% range.

It lost him the game. Glad I'm not on that level.

Watching the video it's pretty clear that they were going to #30 for a three based on their screening and his cut.  SW defended it well and he did the obvious thing which was to dribble into the lane for a pull up jumper.  It wasn't a bad play on his part.  The more logical option, IMHO, would be to attack the basket.  They've got Tut, who's a strong 6-9 and a 66% free throw shooter.  Get the ball on the rim with some time on the clock and if you don't make it you might draw a foul on the rebound.

I was using season stats.  In the handful of games prior to that one he was 0/2, 2/4, and 0/2 for 25%.  He was 2/3 in that game.

Gotcha.  Was curious if he had a hot hand or not.

No coach has won every game nor been perfect every game.  I look forward to following your squad this year since you are God’s gift to basketball.   I can’t wait to learn from you.

He didn't play in the Mercer game (district championship).  Not sure why.

He didn't appear to have a hot hand, he was 1/5 from 2 and 2/3 from 3.

Dumphord was shooting 65% from the line.  That's definitely in the "don't foul" range.

Take notes! I completely agree with you though. Just not something I would’ve done.

Based on this article I stand corrected on my comment about not taking a three when down two.

He points out that in order to win when going for a 2 when you are behind by 2 you not only have to hit the 2 but you have to win in overtime.  If you look at his bar graph near the bottom the win probability is pretty low in either case.

Who is the new addition at West?

I do not know his name, but he is another big kid from another country.  Rumors that I have heard is that he will be the best player on their team.

Steve has forgotten more basketball than you’ll ever know.  I’ve watched him take teams that had low expectations and he turned them into winners.

I’ve watched take team after team to regional tournaments.

I’ve watched him and Jeff Jackson go toe to toe for years with some top notch 12th Region talent with the main rule being the first one to 50 points wins the game.

I’ve watched him make players out of kids who didn’t know they had it in them to be studs.

I’ve watched him win in the game of basketball for decades even though the game keeps constantly changing around him since the time he began coaching.

Long story short, Steve is and has always been a phenomenal coach whose sole purpose is to put his team in the best position to win the game.

Last thing I’m gonna do is listen to armchair coaches over analyze something they likely don’t know squat about.

For interested parties, the region’s All A draw took place today at the AD’s meeting.  The tournament is Jan. 5th-9th at DCA.
Top of Bracket: Somerset VS. Burgin, with winner playing DCA in Semis.

Bottom of Bracket: Danville vs. TCA, with winner playing Somerset Christian in Semis.

This is funny.

Here’s a couple free shots so we can get the ball back.

Said no coach ever who trusts their defense.
