It is being reported this afternoon by Adam Schefter of ESPN that Golden was interviewed today to be the Bengals next DC and as many people have thought Schefter said he would be named later today or tomorrow as the Bengals defensive coordinator.

Defense just got worse!

Golden was a joke when he coached Miami Hurricanes.

Once again big difference between being a head coach and a coordinator. Plenty of very good and even great coordinators have failed as head coaches, but were great as coordinators. 

I like the hire. He has ties both in college and the NFL. He was part of the team when the defense was really good and made those great halftime adjustments. Plus we are starting to more coaches with college coaching experience be successful in the NFL. Since a lot of college schemes are now making its way to the NFL. The Bengals under Lou the last few years have struggled to develop young talent, which is a must once you pay your QB. So getting a guy like Golden who has been successful developing players in college, and running a defense. Plus he has some NFL experience too, so I think this is a very good hire.

Solid hire.  One might argue for someone like Salas, but still a solid hire who checks a lot of boxes.  High-end major college defensive coordinator; Notre Dame was top-notch during his tenure.  Familiarity with the Bengals organization as linebackers coach.  Developed the LBs successfully during his tenure.  The organization’s top pick for the job - they’re not settling for Plan B.  
 

Nothing wrong with the hire at all. 

I don’t consider him a bad hire. I believe him having experience in college and pro football helps along with his ties to both.

Agreed. Salas would have been a big splash type of hire that probably would have got more fans excited. However, I think this hire is actually better for the team than Salas would have been. Only because Salas is probably getting a HC job again sooner rather than later, and if he comes and does good then he probably would be gone in one year. 
 

That could happen with Golden too, if he does a good job. However, I think it would take a few years of him doing a good job before he becomes a true candidate for a NFL HC job. So Golden allows them at least have the same coach in a place for a few years. 

"Solid" is probably as far as I'd go on this one. 

If I were a Bengals fan, I certainly wouldn't be over the moon about it. 

Why the hate on this hire?  He consistently improved the defense at ND.  His first season, they were barely in the top 40 defense.  In his second year, they cracked the top 10 in defense.  This past season, he coached the #2 defense in the country.  That's good coaching, no matter how you look at it.  

This is a great hire!  Now, we need some players on defense, because the scheme doesn't matter with the garbage pile that the Bengals have on Defense.  Outside of Tre Hendrickson, there is nobody worth keeping.  Not a single player.  They are either busts, washed up, or were never any good.  Get this man some players that can actually play on Sundays and let him do his thing.

Agree in principle.  But paying Burrow and Chase and Hendrickson market value will limit the possibilities.

With the Bengals’ potent offense, even middle-of-the-pack defense should mean playoffs as long as Joe B stays healthy.  Which quite frankly is always a niggling concern. 

And finally, I want a bonus point for using “niggling” in a pro sports forum.
