Bluto Posted January 3 Posted January 3 I find it interesting that none of the top 4 ranked teams advanced to the Semifinals. 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Boise State 4) Arizona State All lost. Nothing profound; just interesting. 1
theguru Posted January 3 Posted January 3 Are we sure on the rankings, we are discussing it in another thread and fc/google says it was this: The actual final playoff rankings by the committee was in this order Oregon, Georgia, Texas, and Penn State. So those four would have been the playoffs in the 4 team playoff system.
Tranquility Base Posted January 3 Posted January 3 Seeded, not ranked. The CFP needs to do away with the byes for the conference champions. Get your 12 and then seed and bye the top 4 seeds. 3

To me it shows that the automatic seedings aren't that indicative of where they truly deserve to be. And the expanded playoffs (whether 12 or 16 teams) allow the truly deserving teams to earn their way to the championship game. 1

We need to take the humans out of the equation. 3

Yeah, but humans will always be part of the equation. Adding teams (12 or 16) is the best way to allow the most deserving teams a chance to prove that they have been underestimated.

I think with an agreed upon power rating system before the season starts we can mostly eliminate the human condition. 2
hrcarrier Posted January 3 Posted January 3 I personally didn’t believe Arizona State and Boise State should have had byes. I think that the right teams were still chosen but it will get better with time likely with regard to who gets byes and who doesn’t. I still look for plenty more first round bad games to happen and maybe further into the future and this will worsen once it gets to 16 teams. The expanded playoff has made college football more interesting and entertaining in my opinion. 1
Jumper_Dad Posted January 3 Posted January 3 This is year one and a very small sample size. I don't want to over react in any direction after one year. The byes were to reward teams for actually winning their conference and I don't have a major issue with that. As far as people being upset with blowouts...it happens. Under the two team BCS we had blowouts, under the four team CFP we've seen blowouts and we will see even more when this eventually expands to 16 teams. The goal is to determine a champion not to field 11 highly competitive games. The fact that all four bye teams lost says more about the parity of college football than being an indictment against the new CFP system. A twelve team playoff is vastly superior to everything we've had prior to this, let's give it some time to work itself out. 2

The only thing I think conference champions should be guaranteed is a home game, if they aren't a top 4 team (which are at bowl sites)
bugatti Posted January 3 Posted January 3 If I was sports tzar, the following would be implemented. But I know this is all about money and would never happen. 1. Eliminate conference title games. 2. Have this thing wrapped up by New Year’s Day. It’s not that this day holds any significance, but when you force a conference champ to take off 4 weeks, the advantage of a bye goes away, especially if that game is on a neutral field. We see this every year and act shocked annually when a team looks a certain way when they’re in the routine of playing each week and suddenly required to take off a month.

Let seeding determines who gets a home game and who gets a bye.
TheDeuce Posted January 3 Posted January 3 Let's get the 12 teams. I'd prefer a computer ranking to do that. Once we have the 12 teams seeded "in order," the top four seeds get a bye, and should get to play in a bowl game that is closest geographically to them based on seeding. #1 gets the lowest seeded winner from Round 1, so on and so forth. Teams 5-8 host a playoff game in the first round. Teams 9-12 go to one of the the previous mentioned 4 teams for the First round.
