Somerset makes the 135 mile trek east Friday to take on the Blackcats!

These teams have met twice recently in the playoffs with Somerset winning in both the 2013 and 2016 playoffs.

Prestonsburg comes in at 11-1 while Somerset is sitting at 8-4.

Breathitt County is the one common opponent. Somerset beat Breathitt 42-21 at home while Prestonsburg lost to Breathitt 35-6 on the road.

I expect an exciting game this Friday night.

  • Excited for this game. Somerset has had a couple speed bumps this season. I believe the difference for the Jumpers this season is in the passing game. Corban Cimala has become a go to receiver for QB

  • P'burg has had a great season under first year head coach Wes Hager, but SOS is very suspect here.  Breathitt Co. about ran the clock on them a few weeks ago (a team Somerset handled).  Somerset wins,

  • Thanks, missed that.

I think Somerset wins this game and gets back to the final 4 for the second time under Clevenger.  However, I can't see them getting any further than that.

P'burg has had a great season under first year head coach Wes Hager, but SOS is very suspect here.  Breathitt Co. about ran the clock on them a few weeks ago (a team Somerset handled).  Somerset wins, and sets up big boy game with O'cath in Semis.

Which Somerset team is better?  This years or last?

I also just saw that they are calling for AM snow showers in Prestonsburg.  What kind of field do they have and will that play a factor in this game?

Hard to say.  They miss Kam Hughes playmaking ability, but brother Kris has had a fantastic season.  The defense for Somerset has been solid all season.

I don't think they can come to Catholic and win if they are not as good as they were last year. Just going off what you said they missing a big-time playmaker from last year that got pretty much shut out. I just don't see them winning.

I've never said they could.  I was just trying to give a breakdown of the two teams.  Somerset has played much better ball after a loss @ Garrard (who played Louisville Central really tight until the 4th Q last week).  It would be a huge upset IMO if they won @ O'cath.

Excited for this game. Somerset has had a couple speed bumps this season. I believe the difference for the Jumpers this season is in the passing game. Corban Cimala has become a go to receiver for QB Josh Bruner. There are a couple other guys who can catch as well. Kris Hughes is a big part of the offense, but with a couple of extra weapons, defenses cannot key on him alone.  The young offensive line for SHS has developed nicely as the season has progressed and could be the deciding factor as this game plays out.  I don't do predictions but I think this could be a competitive game and the Jumpers will play hard under Coach Clevenger. Lake Cumberland Sports will be doing an audio only broadcast. Link is below.

The Briar Jumpers and Black Cats actually had two common opponents.  In addition to Breathitt County, both played Leslie County.  Prestonsburg beat Leslie County in week one 22-19, while Somerset beat the Eagles 55-13 in week ten.

I picked Somerset to win but I think it’s likely going to be close. I also wouldn’t be surprised if Prestonsburg wins. This is a good thing though, quarter finals should be good games.

I believe they have turf, I don't think there will be enough snow to impact the game.

That said, I love watching snow football!

This is where my thinking is as well. In fact, I'd say this game follows the Breathitt/Prestonsburg format almost to a T.
