I did not realize Beechwood has only won 5 times since 2000.  The Tigers dominated the 90’s and Colonels took care of business in the 80’s.  Great rivalry!

  • This is how old I am, I played in the 82 game, the 83 game, we didn't play in 84, and I played in the 85 game.  CovCath week was always a huge week for us at Beechwood. Go Tigers, Beat Colon

Growing up, this was always the week where the kids at Beechwood would always try to get an extra lick in on the kids from Blessed Sacrament and St. Joe's at Spartans practice, and vice versa, haha.

  • Wasn’t 2021 the year a lot of kids reclassified and played a 5th year for BW?  That might also explain their advantage that year…

Game day!

I still have no feel for this game. Too many injury variables - who is in and who is out? I am hearing Link is back for CCH; Erdman is probably out for Beechwood but we won't know till tonight.

Variables

- Who controls the line of scrimmage?

- Can Beechwood's sophomore receivers continue to make plays?

- Can Beechwood's defense figure out the QB runs and stop Harney from taking over this game?

- Turnovers are always huge. CCH defense has 8 interceptions. Can the CCH defense get a pick off the rarely intercepted Hayden?

I was hopeful we would see Oliver Link back in for Cov Cath. That's a major boon to our receiving corps.

I'm hearing Erdman is a no-go at Beechwood, unfortunately.

Sorry, forgot to include the bold part in my post above. Reposting here to make sure that is visible for everyone.

Here is the angle I'll be watching - it is almost always the decisive factor in CCH versus Beechwood. It isn't skill players as we all usually talk about. Beechwood always has good skill players. This game is almost always decided in the trenches. The fact is Beechwood rarely has the size and depth up front to match up with CCH. This year they do. Beechwood has the size and the depth in the trenches to match up with anyone in the state. When Beechwood has enough size in the trenches to matchup up with CCH, the Tigers have a good chance to win. In 2021, Beechwood had a fantastic line and they won the game 21-7. Very good line last year and lost 31-35. The Tigers had the line in 2020 and should have won that game so having the line doesn't lead to a win, it just improves the Tigers chances a lot. The 2024 line has a couple different players from last year but is bigger and arguably better so far. That is where most of my optimism for a Tigers win comes from.

That said, with Fryman and Erdman likely out for Friday the Tigers lose two of the fastest players in the state from their defense. That will be a problem with Harney running the ball. I will be interested in seeing Coach Volker's defensive plan. Hopefully the Simon Kenton game helped Beechwood, with the looks the Tigers got against the SK offense with read options and QB mobility being the whole focus of their offense. But it is hard to simulate and combat speed. You need speed to match speed. The Tigers speed advantage against almost everyone they face is not there without Erdman and Fryman. The Tigers have depth on their defensive line. They can go with a speed line or a bulk line. Coach Volker's defensive strategy is going to be key.

The Tigers might turn the tables on CCH in this one. In 2020, CCH ran the ball and controlled the clock. Most teams that have faced the Tigers the last year and a half try that same plan - run the ball and control the clock. Despite the passing offensive numbers, Beechwood very well may run straight at CCH and see how they do against the Tigers offensive line and running backs Chase Flaherty and Brody Aylor.

So many angles to consider. It is very hard for me to predict the strategy and how the game flow will go. I honestly don't know what we will see Friday night but I can't wait to see it.

I think a bunch of kids reclassified for a bunch of programs. Not just one team or one year

I agree @Al Bundy and unless we are also going to start talking about kids held back in the 3rd grade (clearly we are not) I wish we could move past all the COVID stuff.

Well sure, but like why would we talk about kids declassifying at Bourbon Co in a thread about BW vs CCH? Other programs have no bearing on the discussion. The '21 game between BW and CCH was being pointed out specifically. And I think the point being made by 92Rebel was that in that specific game BW had 5th yr kids playing and CCH had none.

If somebody gets a ticket for rolling through the stop sign out front of Beechwood and then takes it court and tells the judge "A bunch of people rolled through that stop sign. Not just me this one time," would you expect the judge to tear up the ticket?

A lot of kids meaning one?

All in the name of academics, I assume.

Link's biggest advantages are his height and ability to get downfield fast. From what I remember most of his catches the last 2 yrs have either been screen passes or long balls. BW seems to do well shutting down the screen most years and their guys were pretty fast last year. I don't remember them giving up any deep passes to CCH last year.

Seems like this year we've kinda limited our vertical passing because Harney's accuracy diminishes quickly once he's has more than 20yds or so between himself and the receiver. I don't know if we wanna risk deep throws tonight with the speed of BW's defenders and potential for them to turn off-target passes into pickoffs.

One yeah. The one who had been voted the best athlete in the state the year before.
