Highlands 32 Covington Catholic 22

The gap in size, talent and depth on the line of scrimmage is very apparent. I’m not sure how we get that fixed.

The inability to stretch the field vertically on offense is an issue. Highlands had their safeties at 7 (!!) yards depth at times; everything is so compressed. Bradshaw, alone, with his size should make you pay for that with vertical routes where he can go high point the ball.

As pointed out above, special teams costing you points becomes a killer in tight games.

Highlands has a pretty good team. Cooper better be ready to hit, tackle and fit the run properly on defense.

We have too many good, competitive young players (Harney, Gaiser, Jonny Lind playing both ways on the line as a soph) to not get much better as the season goes on. I expect a W next week.

Is the speaker system new this year? If not, I understand turning it up. The speaker system has been the worst part of that stadium since it was built IMO.

Same as they've had since 2017 I believe.

I'd love to see us eventually get the money scraped together to put smaller speakers on each of the individual light poles. But that's just another fundraiser to add to the list of ongoing fundraising.

Then the speaker volume needs to stay high. On the visitors side of the field, the PA sounds like they are in a phone booth like that old SNL skit.

So you got me thinking and I went to Google:

What is the heaviest elephant ever weighed?

The largest elephant on record was an adult male African savanna elephant. He weighed about 24,000 pounds (10,886 kilograms) and was 13 feet (3.96 meters) tall at the shoulder!

Wouldn’t want to run into him in a dark alley.

Can an average human outrun an elephant?

The answer, unfortunately, is no. Elephants can reach speeds of up to 25 miles per hour, which is much faster than the average human can run. So if you find yourself in a situation where you need to outrun an elephant, your best chance is to try and find some kind of shelter or hiding spot as quickly as possible.

AND

How fast is the fastest NFL player in mph?

Metcalf's speed paled in comparison to track and field sprinters in a race that didn't include some of the America's best 100 meter runners. Yet, when it comes to the NFL, Metcalf is one of the fastest in the league with a 4.33 in the 40-yard dash and a top speed of 22.64 mph 2020.

The scoreboard manufacturer is the one who made the call on the layout of down, distance, and everything else. It'll take a little bit of adjusting to, but so did getting used to the new scoreboards at Great American and Paul Brown after spending years watching the Jumbotron at Riverfront. I got used to it. The old scoreboard on the Schott Building was not compatible with the hardware and operating system for the new scoreboard, so unfortunately that couldn't stay. The placement of the new scoreboard, as I understand it, was a product of available space combined with an effort to minimize the amount of sun hitting the video screen and reducing visibility of the images on it.

As for the speakers, they're located on the front of the pressbox. So the folks up top are standing behind the speaker horns and they aren't getting blasted like you'd think. I've been up there for more than one game. It's loud, but not much louder than sitting in the top few rows of seats immediately in front of the box. I'm hoping eventually we'll get some speakers installed around the stadium instead of all mounted on top of the press box so we can change up the audio dynamics in the stadium, but right now if the speakers aren't as loud as what you heard last night, then the pressbox crew ends up getting "we can't hear you" complaints all night. Damned if you do, damned if you don't kinda thing.

I would think if you're paying the money you don't let them dictate how it looks. I'm sure there were options. Compatibility on the school board makes sense.

We have a depth problem, yes. I think the biggest factor is simply the "Jimmies and Joes". We've got a small roster. This is the first time since 2001 that the football team's roster has dipped below 60 players. We've averaged a 73 man roster over the last 20 years. 13 players is a big difference.

This season's roster and in the 2001 roster, both, are at 59. In 2001 the school's enrollment had "dipped" to about 500 and the football program had just had back-to-back losing seasons - after nearly two decades without a losing season. More recently Cov Cath's enrollment dropped down into the 460s or 470s...which was low enough to put us at a very mid-sized 4A program in terms of enrollment. We're trying to build enrollment back from that. And I think most anyone would agree that kids would be hard-pressed to make a solvent argument to not go out for the football team by saying that the team hasn't been successful recently.

I think the administrators saw exactly what was coming when they elected - correctly, in my opinion - not petition to play up in 5A and to stay in 4A where our enrollment put us. Once our enrollment is back where it has been historically, we're gonna see a lot more kids on the football team, and we're going to be back to having the team depth we've been accustomed to.

If I'm not mistaken two of our starters up front on defense, Jonny Lind and Charlie Reeves, are both sophomores playing both ways on the line. That's asking a lot of a sophomore. Baptism by fire. I would expect to see some real improvement by those two as the season progresses and they get more acclimated to their varsity duties.

Mason Dietz is one of the only returning starters on the O-line at center, and if I'm not mistaken they had also added him to the defensive line personnel just to add some size and varsity experience up front on that side of the ball; he had a few tackles in the scrimmage against North Laurel, including one or two behind the line of scrimmage. Dietz ended up sitting out injured against Ryle, though, and only appeared in the game on offense last night, wearing braces on both of his arms while playing center. As a former center, I can hardly imagine trying to block someone wearing two arm braces, much less have the whip a shotgun snap back between my legs before doing so.

Last night we were also missing our #1 returning wideout Oliver Link, and sophomore TE/DE Spencer Clukey who is anticipated to be a difference maker, especially on offense. Both will be back once their injuries are healed.

That's one perspective. Another is it so loud on the home side that it rattles the fillings in your teeth. If the visitors can't hear it now, no use having it so loud.

I should research this myself, but how much can it be to put Bluetooth speakers on the poles? At first blush, it doesn't seem like it would be a major capex cost.

Clukey played in the JV game today.

TE/DE Clukey played the whole JV game today. I would be shocked to see his playing duties extend beyond just JV this season, and I mean shocked !

He took zero snaps at DE. Had some reps at Outside LB. Wish the scoreboard in Park Hills was in the endzone so all could see. It is a real nice scoreboard with great video capabilities.

Yeah, you had to stand up to see it from stands because of student body cheering section. Scoreboard….ehhhh. Hard to read from other end zone. Wow, the things we complain about lol
