January 24, 200719 yr You would have to think they he and others probably tried this closed door approach already, and obviously it hasn't worked. So now it is time to go out and public to say this, because maybe the players would see that their team leader is now definitely serious about this and they need to get their act together...I mean if it was someone else who was not the unquestioned leader of the team calling these players out then yeah it might be a problem and cause some tension in the locker room, but Carson is the team leader and so I think they will respect that more and wont cause problems in the locker room... You may be right, I have no idea whether they have had any discussions. It seems to me the best way to resolve matters as sensative as what the Bengals organization is dealing with would be for people that are qualified to deal with those type of things. Palmer's job is to play QB and lead his team while on the field and in the presence of his teammates. If I were one of the players with a problem I would have a great deal more repect for someone that came to me personally and offered help than have someone who goes public and speaks to individuals who really have only one agenda. I learned at an early age that there is no better way to solve a problem than to meet it head on and speak to the subjects involved eye to eye. It may not cure the problem but it will at least keep it in house.
January 24, 200719 yr Ridiculous in so many ways about a serious problem. 1) If the Bengals leave town, we will NEVER get another franchise! It's been how long in LA without a team? And that is the top TV market in the nation, what chance would we have of getting another team? 2) You need to check your facts first, the Bengals uniforms are among the top sellers in the league, the uniforms are different and look very good, one of the best out there! By far the ugliest uniforms out there... And no they are not in the top sellers in overall uniforms sold...

I agree with that but I mean its pretty safe to believe that Carson probably has talked to the players who have been in trouble in house all ready and well that hasn't worked apparently. I mean judging from what some of the Veterans have just said they already had a little in house talk, where they told people not to go out and be the 9th and 10th people arrested this year, and well the in house thing didn't work. So if now they still go out and get in trouble, then they brought it on their own self if the leader of the team calls them out in public...
January 25, 200719 yr Marvin has tried and failed in this approach. I think it will be the same for Carson because he has no more control (probably less) over the other players than does Marvin and therefore this could just be Carson throwing himself under the bus. First of all, Marvin hasn't failed; the players making bad decisions have failed!!! He can't babysit them 24/7; at some point they have to be accountable for themselves. Under the CBA, head coaches are handcuffed; they can quietly not play/deactivate players, but they ABSOLUTELY CANNOT announce suspensions!

I agree with you that they probably have had an in-house discussion and apparently guys did not listen. I also agree that the players getting in trouble brought it upon themselves. That was my point. The problem is way beyond being repaired by talking teammates or coaches, and the fact that these problems keep showing up is proof that some are in need of professional help and all the team meetings and public outburst will not change the current situation. We hear a lot about the Bengals problems but I think most NFL teams experience this problem at some point. IMO until the league and the NFL players Association steps in and puts a plan in place and enforces that plan, this will be a continuing problem for many more years.

Hey Guru, How much control did your father have over you when you were 22 and living under the same roof? My point, Marvin can only do so much!
January 25, 200719 yr Hey Guru, How much control did your father have over you when you were 22 and living under the same roof? My point, Marvin can only do so much! Guru's father could have sent him on his way to live under someone's roof. Marvin could do the same.
January 25, 200719 yr Carson is the face of the franchise. What these clowns are doing reflects on the franchise. He absolutely should be spouting off, and in the media too.

January 25, 200719 yr Author Wildcat, You are arguing semantics now. Marvin rattling his sabre has NOT worked. Carson, Willie, John and anyone else rattling their sabres is NOT going to work either because like you said the players making the bad decisions have failed. So, since sabre rattling has no effect it is a bad idea for any players to be doing it publicly. If this were college football or high school football (the message may be sent in another form from a high school football player) I would agree with the leaders taking charge in "public" but Pro Football is a different animal (because of the CBA) and everyone needs to separate their experiences from what will work when players are protected by one of the strongest unions in the world.
January 25, 200719 yr Guru's father could have sent him on his way to live under someone's roof. Marvin could do the same. ABSOLUTELY NOT, Marvin can not cut any player for off the field behavior; again this would result in a grievance. What good would it do when numberous teams would be lining up to sign a player of Joseph's caliber any way?

What good would it do when numberous teams would be lining up to sign a player of Joseph's caliber any way? Can he cut a player for so called salary cap reasons or does he have to prove it was for that reason? The lineman (Askias?) was cut after his arrest.

I don't care what Carson & Willie do. I was commenting on your comment about Marvin failing with his comments. No one will know if they have failed or not until next season when and if Marvin decides to deactivate Joseph for one or mutltiple games. Only then, if Joseph is deactivated, can we decide if the punishment deters the rest of the team from choosing this kind of behavior in the future. If it continues, then Marvin Lewis will have failed. A side note; the only reason Marvin Lewis talks about this at all is because he is bombarded with questions, rightfully so, about the situation from the media. He is not sounding off of his own accord! He would just as soon handle it in house as anything else.

Askew was cut because he couldn't play; it just happened to coincide with his arrest; he was acquitted of all charges by the way. Marvin could cut under the guise of a salary cap issue, but who would buy that with a 1st round draft choice in his second year????? In this case, Joseph and his agent may not even file a grievance because so many teams would want his services
January 25, 200719 yr Author I was commenting on your comment about Marvin failing with his comments. No one will know if they have failed or not until next season when and if Marvin decides to deactivate Joseph for one or multiple games. Wrong! Marvin has been beating this drum for a long time and he has failed. He may fail some more and that remains to be seen but to this point "Marvin Talk" has been a failure.
