State championship attendance?

Featured Replies

Does anyone have this information across the six games? Always enjoy seeing the numbers and haven’t ran across anything. Also, it’s been 7 years straight in Lexington, is this going to be the forever home? Would love for it to come back to Bowling Green.

I would say if you took a poll of every football player and even coaches in the state of Ky and have them rank which stadiums they would rather play in. UK and UL both would be above WKU. Yes it may n

I wonder how the attendance would be different if they didn't put 2 hours breaks in between the games so "maybe" you keep the fans that are there just to watch High School football to stay to watch mo

I've wondered this myself.

I pulled these numbers from KHSAA.

1A - 6207

2A - 7432

3A - 6205

4A - 8406

5A - 6299

6A - 9029

Total - 43578

Average - 7263

It would've been interesting to see what the numbers could've been had Douglass won at Trinity setting up a State/District Championship game in Lexington between 2 Lexington schools.

Hopefully it stays at UK. First because of it being more centrally located. Secondly I think players just overall would rather get to play at UK, than at WKU. It is just a whole different feel.

The Saturday evening game is a rough time slot. They need to make that the 6A game every year since it will almost 100% have two schools from Louisville-area/Lexington in it.

Kroger is just an empty stadium as well. Poor facility all around. Both UofL and WKU are significantly nicer venues.

The Lynn Family soccer stadium in Louisville would be the perfect venue--holds 15K.

1.  Centrally is subjective.  For the 2A participants it wasn't so central.

2.  The Saturday 8 pm game is a rough slot.  6A should take their turn with this for awhile as @VF111 said, but their coaches complain about it the most and why they don't have that slot right now.

3.  @VF111 While I 100% agree with you, you won't get Lynn Family Stadium.  They asked and the ownership isn't interested in hosting American football games there.  I'm sorry to say.

4.  Feel it is fair to move the venue ever so often.  It can be at UK for the majority; but change is good IMO.  WKU, UofL, EKU, etc.  Zero atmosphere at UK.

@futurecoach WKU has very nice facilities and is an FBS program as well, filling a 1/3 of a college stadium is a much better sight to see.

And to the centralized argument, we’ll use this year for example, Mayfield traveled 4 hours to Lexington and everybody else was 2.5 hours or closer. If it was held in Bowling Green it would’ve been Pikeville on the 4 hour haul while the rest 2.5 hours and in, Lexington is the 3rd option behind Louisville at 2 in my opinion.

WKU could not guarantee that the stadium would be available for the state championship weekend because of possible obligations to Western's football conference.  This is my understanding on why it was changed some years ago.

“Centrally located” is just a lazy way to say they just want it to be at UK because UK is their team.

If Louisville actually bid on the contract, there wouldn’t be a good reason to have it in Lexington over Louisville.

Pikeville, CovCath, Cooper all would have been more than just 2.5 hours. Yes WKU does have good facilities. However, as mentioned I can almost guarantee the majority of players across the state would dream of playing state championship games at a stadium like UK more so than WKU. So I think that should matter more than what is more pleasing to the eye in regards to better sights to see in regards to open seats.

In regards to Lexington and Bowling Green it is definitely fair to bring up the location part of it. To go along with players, coaches and even fans would probably enjoy being at that stadium cheering on their team more than being at WKU. Which I do think playing at Louisville would also be something that players would love. IMO WKU is and should always be the 3rd option.

I think some of you all are mistaking the allure of Rupp with the Grocery Store. Having been around a good number of kids who have weighed D1 offers that include UK, there is very little mystique of "playing for the Cats" in football. To most kids around KY, I would say they're just another football program (except on UofL week which I would say ironically is founded in roundball dislike for one another).

The atmosphere at Kroger field is the worst I have been around and I trace back to the Fairgrounds. I would argue that the Pizza Box, now with its expansions has the same problem. There is just no point playing these games in stadiums that hold 60k+.

But to be fair, WKU has proven themselves about as difficult a group to work with as exists...

I do not think the powers of Lynn Family Stadium have any interest in American football on their grass.

I agree that in our state the kids don’t get more hyped about playing at Commonwealth Stadium over another one. They’re excited to be playing for it all, not where. I know there are various reasons to why the game are where they are (money number one), but they need to be held at smaller stadiums. 6,000 in a 60,000+ stadium is like being at a middle school game.
