Ranking The 12 Remaining Teams

I would agree with your list after watching all 6 championship games except I would flip Mayfield and CAL. They had a common opponent in Lexington Christian Academy. LCA lost to them 14-12 and Mayfield defeated LCA by 22 (58-36). I think I would also flip Bell Co. and Pikeville as well. Pikeville defeated Belfry by 19 and Bell Co. beat them by 3.

Don't forget, Bowling Green lost to LCA which Mayfield beat by 22. I would argue Mayfield is no worse than 4th, and that Bryan Station doesn't want to play them for their 3rd spot. In fact I think I might take Mayfield at 3rd anyway.

  • There is ZERO evidence that Cooper would beat Cov Cath. Cooper hung on for dear life to beat a Highlands team that seemed to get worse as the year went on. Cov Cath dominated that same Highlands team.

BG’s defense at the start of the year, when they played LCA and Bryan Station, was atrocious.

BG’s defense at the end of the year, which featured at least seven different starters at positions than they had during those first couple of weeks, was stifling.

Kudos to the Purples coaching for making the changes and putting players in the positions to be successful.

I think the Purples would be OK with playing anyone at the end of the year.

I would rank them:

1. Boyle

2. Trinity / BG / Mayfield

3. CAL / Cooper / O Cath / Station

4. Cov Cath

5. Pikeville

6. Bell

7. Raceland

Never really think much about these posts when I read them.

But I will say that I would love to see a Boyle County vs. Trinity game next weekend.

Hey @thegurumake it happen - the Bluegrass Preps Bowl!

And I don't know if CAL would lose to anyone but those two teams.

I would donate a lot to make that happen, I wish!  I can envision four figures, lol.

When we get to the end of a season, calpreps.com is a really accurate ranking. Here is how it stands among the 12 finalist schools with their state wide ranking in parenthesis:

1. Boyle County (1)

2. Trinity (2)

3. CAL (5)

4. Bryan Station (7)

5. Bowling Green (8)

6. Covington Catholic (9)

7. Mayfield (12)

8. Cooper (13)

9. Owensboro Catholic (19)

10. Pikeville (27)

11. Bell County (30)

12. Raceland (35)

I feel pretty confident after seeing all teams in saying that Mayfield and O-Cath would both probably beat Cov Cath by 14+. There are some others that are debatable but if you saw Mayfield and O-Cath up close, you know those two did not at all look like 2A teams. They had some serious dudes on the field in that game.

I agree with you. The question would be could Mayfield or O Cath keep CCH's running game from controlling clock.

I just think that both would overwhelm Cov Cath when they were on O that it would be too much for the Colonels.

I think Mayfield would be able to stop Cov Cath, O-Cath, not so much.

I frankly think Mayfield just has significantly better players than Cov Cath this year and in the case of O-Cath, I don't think they would ever punt, namely due to Atwood.

Atwell - and Carrico. It is hard to say one without the other.

Mayfield's defense has been pretty stout against the run, but, Beechwood and OB Catholic rarely ran the ball and LCA had Hensley which can skew the stats even if you're playing pretty well. I don't think Cov Cath could line up and beat a Mayfield with a primary running attack and there QB is nowhere in the league with Atwell, Boley or the kid from Beechwood. I also think Mayfield with overwhelm them with there skill players and balance of run and pass. I think Cooper would give them more problems than CC would.

The bottom line is it’s a blessing to be the final 12 teams.

Do you know how many teams would love to be considered on this list?

Well said! It’s tough to make the finals to begin with and all of them should be extremely proud whether they are champions or runner-ups. Some teams, like Cooper for instance arrived a year early and, like several others, return most or significant portions their teams and could, like MANY OTHERS, could be in the hunt next year.

Kentucky is blessed with some talented players and excellent coaching staffs and while many can pound their chests and “scream” that “this team or that team” is winning it next year, remember this:

The games will be played on the field and they will be won or lost there. I sure there were the same “predictions” at the end of last season too that flat out didn’t materialize this year!

I’m happy to sit back and enjoy the great football in the state of Kentucky as it “plays” itself out on the field ?
