Don’t know who all else watched, but I truly believe Dayton intercepted Brossart late in the game and it was called incomplete. Personally, I’ve never seen a play that looked so clearly turned over. It still didn’t matter much because Brossart turned it over on downs the next play. Just curious if anyone else saw anything indicating an incompletion.

The interception late in the game was so clear. Dayton picked it off, kid ran with it then fumbled. After the fumble the ref called incomplete. It was a clear interception.

Here's a link to watch a video of the play.

Brossart's pass was high. The ball was tipped off the fingertips of the intended receiver and then landed right in the Dayton player's bread basket. Dayton's player proceeds forward 3 or 4 yards and then a Brossart player dives and puts his helmet right into the ball. The ball comes out and is then picked up off of a bounce by another player from Dayton. Officials ruled it an incomplete pass, and tacked on a virtually immediate sideline infraction penalty (straight to a penalty, not a warning) against the Greendevils while the officials are still waving their arms to signal the play dead, presumably for a "colorful" comment coming from the Dayton sideline.

The NFHS video is kind of grainy, so you can't see clearly how well the Dayton player who "intercepted" the ball does or doesn't gain control of the ball before it's knocked loose. I guess theoretically he could have been bobbling it in his hands while still running 4 yards, although it does seem rather unlikely to me.

  • Lost to Beechwood for the second time in 3 years. Dan Ridder was the coach. He was very much underrated in my opinion.

  • Why you play the game. This is only the second time that Brossart has been shut out since October 12, 2018. The other was last year when we lost 7-0 to Newport while without our place-kicker. Day

  • This is now in a playoff win in three consecutive seasons (2021 - Ludlow; 2022 - Berea), but prior to that the last playoff win for Dayton came in the second round against Bellevue way back in 1998.

The officials were right on top of the play and from that angle there is no way to tell if he had control of the ball, while I also agree that's a decent length to be bobbling the ball. It's possible though and we will just have to take the people who were there words for it. Also it looks like someone from the sideline said the magic word with how the Back Judge's body language looked.

Dayton controlled time of possession, and their defense stopped the Mustangs twice while threatening deep in the Red Zone. Being a Brossart fan, I felt like we would catch a momentum swing in the second half and find a way to win. The big fullback Jiminez is a load at 250 lbs and picked up most of his short-yardage challenges, Mason Johnson and Chad Nickell kept the Devils playing in front of the sticks, particularly in the first half. They were able to manufacture two TDs in the last 1:30 of the first half which stood up. Previous to tonight's defeat, Brossart had beaten Dayton seven straight times dating back to 2014, not counting a Covid cancellation.

Reporters from the NoKy Tribune (Terry Boehmker), LINK NKY (Ray Schaefer), and 10thRegion.com (Will Jones) were all on hand covering the game which should be well documented.

Congratulations to the Dayton Greendevils!!!

How does Brossart not put any points on the board with the Smith kid able to kick 57 yard FG’s?  Seems like wasted opportunities in a seemingly very close game where a FG or two could have helped change momentum you allude to. Was Smith healthy to your knowledge?

This is classic second-guessing.  Had we converted and scored on those "Wasted Opportunities" we wouldn't be having this conversation.

A field goal can change momentum. Plus a stop on downs by a defense adds momentum for the defense.

Mustang tends to get riled up if anyone second guesses his coach's decisions. Correct "if" they converted we wouldn't be having these conversations, but the did not so here we are. If you have a high school kicker who can hit from 30 on the regular you use him. This kid can hit 57? That's insane to not use him.

How many third and fourth down conversions did Brossart have in the game on Dayton’s side of the field?
l am legitimately asking because I am not certain. And agree, that’s the beauty of this forum - to be able to discuss or second guess all the wasted opportunities.  Not converting  on 4th down at their own 30 with a minute left in the first half put them in a hole. 14-0 at the half with Dayton getting the kickoff.

Seems like shortening the field for Brossarts offense with a big leg in Smith could have been helpful, as well as give the team more confidence. Brossart struggled in the red zone all night. Get points. Obviously I wasn’t on the sidelines so do not claim to know the entire situation. Just a fan who enjoys NKY football.

Disclaimer- In no way am I intending any sort of disrespect to anyone involved. I’m just a dude, playing a dude, behind an obscure handle name. (Kudos to anyone getting the movie reference)

I absolutely LOVE “Mustangs” passion for all things Brossart.  And yes there’s a video of Smith hitting from 57 circulating social media.

Are you saying that happened? Brossart went for it on 4th down from their own 30 with a minute left in the first half?

Dayton had a great third down conversion rate.  But on 4th down, Dayton’s punter was excellent.  Brossart did not adjust and kept underplaying the punt.  Dayton pinned them at 6 on one because of that.

Yes that happened. I believe it was the series following Dayton’s first score. Dayton was up 6-0 (missed 2 pt conversion) if my memory serves me correctly.

The punter for Dayton did a great job.

That was not a good decision. I can't think of any situation where that makes sense.

Overall, Dayton did well on third down and punting by Nickel was good almost every punt he did.
