If my memory serves and I probably have it on my computer somewhere in the coaches association notes that was distributed to us after our meeting, our plan proposed to the principals was Boys first round, M-T; Girls first round W-R; Boys semis, Friday; Girls Semis Saturday noon; Boys Semis Saturday evening; Girls Finals Monday. We did discuss Sunday but went with Monday in our final proposal, I am pretty sure.

 

One of our concerns was no media coverage. We play the championship game on Tuesday night and the boys Sweet 16 starts the next morning. Guess what is the coverage in the newspapers and television. Not the 10th region Girls Basketball Championship.

 

Also, Estill County was used as an example. With the regional tournament at CCMS and them playing with that LONG drive, they had to spend the night on a Monday to be rested for the game on Tuesday. But their fans, drove back home on Monday night arriving well after midnight and then drag themselves back to Alexandria on Tuesday night. For the cheerleaders and pep band who had to be at school at 8:00 AM, that is two long, long days.

 

We felt that we lost some crowd that would come to the championship game on Tuesday but had already headed to the Boys' Sweet 16 on Tuesday night.

The things I don't agree with are when the policies focus on bringing the boys sports "down" rather than lifting the girls sports "up" to try to bring "equality".

Two things i really don't like here,The boys being played at noon and 3:30 on sat.And the girls that sat night at 8.Simply put the girls Championship game will suffer mightily here if any of the 2 girls teams playing in the championship game on Sat nite at 8 are from schools of the boys team playing the 3:30 game in Maysville.Because by the time that game is over people wont be able to make it to Montgomery County for the girls game{Again this only assumes that a team from the same school would be in each game}.Eight out of 10 fans would pick to wacth that boys semi game over there girls game that night when they have to choose.I would much rather the boys keep the mon/tue thing than this.And this is coming from a fan minutes from where the boys games are played.I would hate to be a fan an hour or more away and have to choose like this or make that noon game.

 

A sad fact about your words of 8 out of 10 would choose the boys game but a true statement nonetheless and very unfortunate and again the girls would get the raw end of the deal. . This proposal might be the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. This needs to be voted down and left alone, aside from the Greatest Show in Hoops at the Sweet 16, this tournament is and has been right behind it with the atmosphere on a semifinal Friday night and Championship Saturday night. This proposal = Terrible!

If my memory serves me correctly, one of the largest crowds ever for a Boys 10th Region final was on a Sunday afternoon. It was either 1996 or 1997. Somebody help me out.

Again, I'm willing to try anything once. If it doesn't work, then we can change it back.

Not to get off track but Title IX was NEVER about bringing boys sports down. Some administrators chose to go that way instead of bringing the girls sports up. I can honestly and truthfully say that the administrators that I worked with NEVER did that. It was about bringing the girls sports up to the boys and not holding anything back on the boys. But to give those girls the same avenues for success that the boys had.

I'm glad your situation wasn't that way, but overall there is no question that this law has had a negative effect on male athletes. It's done a LOT of good too, but not in all cases has it been implemented to push all students to higher levels of excellence.

My buddy coaches in Northern Ky and they were audited by the folks from Title IX. They forced this particular school to LOWER THE SINKS IN THE BOYS LOCKER ROOM SO THEY WOULD BE THE EXACT SAME HEIGHT AS THOSE IN THE GIRLS LOCKER ROOM. Like I said - I think the law has helped in a lot of ways, but it has also had some MAJOR flaws.

 

To be fair - if the administrators had built that softball field for the girls in the first place then there would have been no audit...

As an outsider, I like the proposal ... it's a good way to deal with the change in state tournament schedules.

As another outsider, I have to say that the proposed schedule appears to be unnecessary, confusing, and just plain stupid.

Boys semis would be over around 5 that afternoon. Its about a 1 hr drive or so from Maysville to Mt. Sterling and thats driving the speed limit. Fans wantint to see the girls finals will have more than enough time to get there.

From the minutes of the 10th Region Girls Coaches Association on October 12th of 2004.

 

Mac Whitaker proposed that the association discuss making a proposal to the 10th Region Principal Association on changing the structure of the girls regional tournament. Three major concerns were noted: 1)Monday and Tuesday games lead to long travel for some schools on back-to-back school nights. The example was used of Estill County playing these games when the tournament was hosted at Campbell County Middle School. Estill had to spend the night instead of making the drive on consectutive school nights. 2)With Wednesday’s media focused on the start of the boys state tournament, the coverage of the 10th Region Championship is a mere blip in the media coverage. The girls are being slighted in favor of the boys for the recognition they deserve. 3)The Tuesday night championship game is hurt financially by those who have already left for the boys state tournament. It was discussed that financially each program would benefit from moving the games off of a Monday-Tuesday night format.

 

After lengthy discussion and several possible formats, the motion was passed, 11-0, that the coaches association propose to the principal association the following girls regional format:

 

Wednesday-Thursday first round games as they stand

Saturday semifinals 11:00 AM First game 1:00 PM Second game

Monday 7:30 Championship game
