South Warren (2-0) will gas up the bus and head west to "The Reservation" to take on a rested

Warriors squad who had an early bye week last week.  In the opening week of the season, Southwestern (0-1)

hosted a solid 6A Ballard squad and fought well but fell 41-34.

The Spartans come into this game with a 2-0 record having defeated North Hardin 48-38 in the Forcht Bank Bowl in Campbellsville and

then last Friday hosted Henderson County and broke out of a 17-14 lead in the 3rd quarter to win going away 38-14.

Southwestern likes run.  South likes to stop the run.  Will be interesting to see which side is able to impose their will more effectively to earn this win.

Who ya got in this one?

The best thing about an intra-class top ten match-up is how it directly peels away a layer of the onion. We should know a little - or maybe a lot - more about where the Spartans and Warriors fit in 5A this season.

I can see this one going either way, but I'll take Southwestern by a nose at home.

Why on earth would you schedule a bye week this early in the season?

When you see a team in HS football with a bye in Weeks 1-3 it is typically not by design. In fact, there have been more than a few teams in the last couple of years that took a bye in Week 1. There is a push and a pull to making a schedule—and often to get the games your team needs— you have to make a few sacrifices, and a Week 2 bye is certainly worth it if you get to play stiff competition. This especially reigns true in the day of the RPI. I would imagine most coaches would agree that it’s better to have a bye week in Week 2, than to take a cupcake game so you can have Week 7-10 free. Furthermore, Southwestern isn’t exactly in the most accessible area in the state. Therefore many teams probably shy away from scheduling them to avoid a 2+ hour bus drive. Like many schools in the state, they are limited to a select few teams that are willing to play them/travel to their place, and all of those willing participants have schedules of their own… So sometimes you just get what you get…

Better head East if coming from BG to Somerset, going west is definitely the long way round. 😆

My gut tells me South Warren should win this. But being a road game and with Southwestern being as strong as they have been, I can certainly see this going in the Warriors' direction.

I think the game is won by 7-10 points, with either team realistically being the winner.

I agree with this.  How is Southwestern's pass defense?  South Warren has made a living this season with short passes turned into long gains and not much rushing.  Through 2 games, South reportedly has 800 yards through the air and less than 160 on the ground.  So, if the Warriors can cover the pass, they should be able to slow the Spartans down.  Against Ballard (a good 6A school), SW gave up 222 yards on the night.

On the other side of things, South reportedly has given up on 24 yards rushing through 2 games and 600 through the air.  So, can Southwestern generate pass yardage and keep the chains moving via the pass?  Against Ballard who typically is a talented defensive team they earned 162 passing yards and QB Collin Burton was 14 for 21 for 162 yards 1 TD and 1 INT.  It will be a must to keep the turnovers down in this game.

Not sure I've cleared anything up here, other than to see it should be a close game.
