Interesting, this surprises me (both the timing [they should be better next year] and that he'd want to leave), but I wish him the best.

Someone will be coming into a decent situation, with a TERRIFIC player with two years left, and an improving cast around her.

The year he is leaving doesn't surprise me at all. His eldest graduated last year, she played for him. His middle daughter didn't play basketball but she graduates this year and his youngest, a son, will be coming up through the ranks soon and a varsity girls schedule would probably keep him away from seeing a lot of those events.

Doing it in April is a little weird, though its not uncommon for Catholic schools to make these moves after Spring Break.

The biggest surprise for me is that they didn't have an in-house coach ready to take over as has been the case for most of their basketball openings, men's and women's, for most of history.

It will definitely draw a large applicant pool. And also, call me crazy, but there's a non-zero chance one of them is John Brannen.

You make great points, but after 20 years on a NewCath bench, I didn't think about his kids involvement or non-involvement playing as big a role, but I think you're 100% right and I should have seen that aspect.

Oh, I definitely think John is live here, but I don't think it is super likely.  Obviously his girls will be juniors (I think), but he does have the gig with Anthony Grant at UD, so will be interesting if he seriously pursues it, and if so, to what level.

NewCath is in the midst of their Capital Campaign, so there is a lot of buzz around the school, its alums, and the future plans, so it is a cool time to bring in someone; I wish them luck, hope they knock it out of the park.

Who is Kayla Umberg?

A former NCAA D1 head coach and current D1 assistant would leave to be head coach at a 1A girls high school?

He isn't a D1 assistant, he is behind the bench, but as I said, I don't think it is super likely.  He does have his money from UC now, the girls don't want to move, and the non-coaching position at Dayton was a favor from Anthony before John got his money.

I don't think it is likely, but I don't think it is impossible.

How about Kevin Bundy for this job?  Or maybe Kayla Umberg?

I get the sense that Kevin Bundy has run out of fans around the area.

I'll be honest, I have no idea who the candidates will be. I don't think they are any of the names mentioned here so far and I don't think they will be from the current staff (or we would have a new coach already). With that said, my best guesses at people who may go for it:

Marcus Harris, Ludlow boys' assistant and former girls assistant at NDA, HC, SHDHS, and Scott

Sam Elsbernd, former boys coach at Pendleton and girls coach at Bracken

George Stoll, former NCC girls head coach

Nicole Chiodi - former NCC assistant and legendary player

Tyler Teke - former Lloyd head coach and Ryle assistant

Paul Sturgeon - current Lloyd head coach and former St. Henry Head Coach

There is some guy named Dawn on line one. LOL

I don't know if there is any interest, but Larry Redmond is an alum and former assistant coach at Ursuline Academy.

That was actually a name I thought of.   I know she did some assistant coaching at the college level.  Wonder if previous head coaching experience will be a requirement.
