At the regular scheduled March board meeting the Carter Co. school board hired and an architect and construction manger for the purpose of building a new high school and a career and technical central. 

22-23 Enrollments

East Carter: 727

West Carter: 525

Total: 1252.   That would make them a 5A football school. 

Also with the question if they could compete year in and year out in 5A football would also be the travel to play 5A currently they would have to travel to northern KY, far southern KY, or central KY that would be a minimum of 2+ hours each way for bus travel.

Hope they like the bus in football, next closest 5A is Montgomery. That’s in with Madison Southern, East & West Jessamine. There is no easy way from Olive Hill/Grayson to Nicholasville . Good news it’s a bad district for football. They can complete.

I agree and that is where they would probably go since that district only has 4 teams currently. 

They will get to know I64 very well.  Montgomery Co. won't be too bad but the other schools are 2 hours.

The proposed site is about 5 miles out of Grayson towards Olive Hill.

There's a mark on Google Maps on US 60 outside of Grayson that says Carter County High School although it is clearly nothing but trees. I'm assuming that will be the location.

They will become a 16th Region basketball powerhouse.

Should…..wonder what they do with the coaching situations? That use to be area many moons ago…

West Carter is really just a continuation of the old Olive Hill High School. West Carter opened in 1971. Both were called the Comets and wore maroon and white. East Carter also opened in 1971, a combination of Prichard High (Grayson) and Hitchins High (east of Grayson).

There are two decent sized towns in Carter County - Grayson (the county seat) and Olive Hill. They are fifteen miles apart. In fact, Carter County is 411 square miles, making it among the top quarter in size of Kentucky counties, so it is a fairly spread out place. However, neither town is centrally located and with roads not always great in eastern Kentucky, opening a central, consolidated high school in that county in 1971 likely wasn't feasible. The location of the new school set to open in a few years is much more centralized, albeit not close to either town.

From what I hear there’s a distinct fan loyalty for both schools. A person told me it’s almost like there’s two different counties with Olive Hill on one side and Grayson on the other end, with an imaginary boundary in the middle. But this is usually the case with all consolidations and requires a few years to get everyone assimilated.

I just hope they don’t add Central to their school name. There seems to be a hundred Centrals around the state. Just keep it Carter County High School.

Agree with this. I'm curious what the school name, nickname, and colors will be.
