2023 Coaching Carousel

Featured Replies

With several jobs already open and many more expected in the next two weeks it's time to play Coaching Carousel.

Syracuse, Notre Dame, Texas, Ole Miss, Texas Tech are all Power Conference jobs that are already open.

Georgetown, California, Penn St, Stanford, Georgia Tech, St. John's, Ohio State (possibly), Washington, Wichita State, UCF and Arizona State are all expected or possible openings that are about to come open.

It's looks like Chris Beard won't be unemployed long as he is in open discussions with Ole Miss.

Former LSU coach Will Wade is likely to end up back on the sidelines soon with a mid-level job that will surely big a quick stepping stone for him.

Then we have Rick Pitino who has openly talked about wanting to coach another 6 years, (he's 70 in case you are wondering) at a bigger program than Iona. Rumors is that's he had his eyes set on either St. John's or Georgetown to possibly make a final NCAA push and wrap up his HoF career.

Rick was fantastic at UK.  No doubt about it.  I don't think anyone could have turned the program around as well and as quickly as he did.  I still think he oversaw the greatest team in the program's

At this point Pitino might as well wait to see how things play out with Calipari and Texas. If Calipari were to leave, then might as well bring back Pitino. Around 6 to 8 years seems to be the max a coach should stay at UK before fans get restless, so 6 more years for him would be the right amount. Which is why so many fans can’t move on from the Pitino years. He stayed the right amount and went out on top, before fans could possibly get upset when things would have eventually started to come down some. So he could come back and put another good 6 years in before retiring.

1. I don't think Cal to Texas is happening.

2. No way Mitch would hire Pitino, that is not going to happen.

Kentucky fans treated Pitino like absolute dirt when he was at Louisville. Zero chance he would ever even consider that.

Pitino nailed the UK run. No doubting that.

future can speak for himself, but I believe he was hyping Pitino as a tongue and cheek shot at the fanbase.

Yes, it goes both ways...he's not applying at UK and UK wouldn't hire him if he did.

St. John's seems like a natural Rick spot, but I wish the guy would go into television. I think he is tremendous in front of a camera analyzing the game.

What's a better job St. Johns or Syracuse?  I really don't know the answer, but on the hoof I would think Syracuse.

Correct!

Have always thought this, too. Seems to be a lot of Pitino-to-Georgetown floating around the last few days, although you never know where these comments originate.

Tough call. Both have good access to talent in New York City, but talent in NYC isn't as restricted to the city as it used to be. There's more money at Syracuse because of football/TV, but we've not seen Syracuse be good under anyone but Boeheim and even he hasn't exactly flourished in the ACC. That said, we've not seen St. John's be good since at least Mike Jarvis' tenure in the late-90s. I'd say the right coach could make them both a Sweet 16-caliber program, but the wrong coach could annually go 14-17 at both spots.
