For Somerset, I would add the '82 team with Stephens, Neikirk and Sexton.  They beat Corbin handily but lost to Boyle by 1 and had to stay home from the playoffs.  I believe if they would have won they would have taken AA that year.

Did they beat one the other eventual state champs that year in the regular season also?

1994 Boone County.  Shaun Alexander's senior year and they were 14-0 and ranked in top 25 in the nation before losing to Trinity in the championship game.

  • The 2002 Mason County team. Running clocked the AA state champs that year. Lost by 7 in a frigid battle in Ft Thomas for the semis.

1996 was my first season at Mason, and Dayton gave us our first loss. Kicked our tails good. At Paris, we played Dayton in the first round of the playoffs, 1993. We got them, but they gave us all we w

I'm gonna slide this in because I feel like - although one round outside of the rules - it is the greatest team to come up short in the last 30-35 years.

1992 Covington Catholic (12-1) - defeated in 3rd Round by Highlands, 14-7, on a muddy field after a night of storms drenched Wooten Field. A stunning upset by the Tom Duffy-led Bluebirds led by the great John Schlarman, Corey Scarlato, and Adam Crawford.

CovCath defeated the Birds, 42-21, at Highlands during the regular season, had just completed a 10-0 regular season, and breezed through the first two rounds of the playoffs. KHSAA officials, media/pundits, etc all believed the Colonels were such locks to make the state finals, they actually pre-published state programs with QB Adam McCormack's picture on the cover.

That Colonels team - that has been talked about often on here - included senior standouts McCormack, Chad Cogswell, Jude Hoffman, and Mike Hild. Youngsters adding to the impressive team were guys like Rick Woolf, Matt Rabe, Mitchell Jobe, Pete Wehrman, and steamrolling linemen Ben Belbot and Andy Halloran.

To this day, I still can't believe that game went the way it did. I was on the field and still think about that game often.

I went to that game with a cousin from Highlands and some friends from school. I was very young but remember that game well. Cov Cath was HEAVY favorites to win state that year. I believe Highlands went on to beat Paducah for the championship. Highlands had a really good team that year too.

I was going to mention that Danville squad in 1993.  They lost that heartbreaker to Prestonsburg and on the other 9 times Danville would have won in a 10 game series.

Those Ads beat the 4A Runnerup by 14 I believe and the AAA Runnerup in a rout.  In that run from '91-'94, most will tell you that '93 was the best team.

WOW! The '94 team righted the ship (no pun intended) by destroying a super talented Bullitt East squad in the finals who had taken us to the woodshed in the semis.

Boyle was very good in 1982. Mike Harmon, Tommy Pettit, Pearl Stepp, Andy Baker... sure I am leaving some good ones off, but they were tough. One of Ed Rall's best teams.

Would also include Boyle County, 1970, before Robert Allen Yankey died. Boyle scrimmaged Bardstown that fall and (according to my Dad and his former players ?) were the much better team. Bardstown went on to win the Class A State Championship (Boyle's classification in 1970).

I love my Dad, but keep in mind, he told me one time that Keith Horn could throw a football from one end of the field to the other. He was a little biased when it came to the guys he coached.

I went up to watch them practice one afternoon in November. Believe it was the Ashland week. Not sure anyone said a whole lot, but they were a machine. On and off the field in about an hour and 15 minutes. Watched the defensive line do scheme review. For the next 30 years, that was the way we did it. Might have been the best HS defensive line I've ever seen. Impressive.

Those guys were big, strong, fast......and crazy.  I know I've been told that Schlarman  told the team they won't lose again after the first Covcath lose. And they didn't.

This!!!

That team was maybe the best to ever wear the Purple and Gold!

If Somerset hands off instead of the QB trying to score on that 2pt conversion, I'll never convinced that they don't walk to a title that year.

I would never argue with John Schlarman!

On a side note.... our Triple Screen that we developed at Mason County and was really good for us, all the way up to the 2021 season at Mercer County, the read for that play came from Coach Schlarman. He helped me with that part at the UK clinic one spring.  Great football mind!

One more thing... his 2005 Newport team was awful good. Gave the Russell Red Devils all they wanted on on their way to the state title... 34-33 loss in OT, state quarterfinals.

They handled Danville in Regionals in that Newport quagmire that year as well.

Rob and I became friends. One time, he gave me a heads up on an issue he saw as a problem for me and wanted to make sure I was aware of what was going. Always appreciated his friendship & loyalty.
