And while "player empowerment" is captivating, really all "player empowerment" means is handing over NBA franchises to a handful of players. Don't like your circumstance, KD, after being in year one of a four year contract? Let's demand a trade. That's not how this is supposed to work. I will say the impact of this is being felt less since there is so much talent around the league.

 

I saw a video the other day that really laid it all out extremely well. The players are really the victims, and fans and media are actually the causes. 

Think about it... what is the biggest judgement in the NBA when evaluating a players success? Rings. Regular season stats take account into it, but majority of the time you will hear "it doesn't matter, do the same in the playoffs." I don't necessarily blame the players, they get close to nothing out of the regular season. Especially the veterans. 

Re: Load Management

The season is too long. Playing 82 games is too much, but that won't change because the owners don't want to sacrifice that revenue. However, with an 82-game schedule you can implement some load management and it not really affect your playoff standing. Add to that the play-in aspect of the tournament for teams 7-10 in each conference and it only incentivizes more load management. I absolutely want my best players healthy for the playoffs so why not give the best four a night off in Orlando this week? It doesn't really affect our standing anyway.

I do remember doing it for zero pay and I had no trouble showing up the next day to do it again.

Yes, they are. But can you blame them? Majority of these players sitting out are veterans, they have all the experience they need. At this point in their career (most of them), they will get little to no credit for regular season stats. All that the media looks at with these guys is rings and playoff stats. 

100%, load management is a huge problem, and it is ridiculous that we have to even talk about it. It is not fair to the people that save up to watch their favorite play, and he is sitting on the bench in street clothes. However, I do not think that they players are the problem behind the whole situation.

Should major league pitchers play every day?

Here is a silly solution - PTO. You give the players some number of games they can use for off time any way they want. Beyond those days, you only get paid when you play or are dealing with injury.

Do the stars in the NFL play in the preseason games?   Do they play the last week of the regular season if it doesn’t matter?  Load management is about fatigue, to me, not really injury avoidance.  It’s about being ready for the playoffs. Being a half step quicker than the opponent because you’re rested. Jumping a half inch higher because of your energy level. These are elite athletes, so the slightest advantage could be the difference. I believe many think load management provides that advantage. I also believe that some load management is even dictated by the team not the player.

Ironic... I saw a Twitter post saying that this was the most viewed all-star weekend ever. Not sure how you have the most viewed Saturday night ever, and the smallest viewed game the night after. Oh what to believe these days....

Did they say all-star weekend or all-star game? The game itself was watched at a record low rate.

I also don't know what to make of tv ratings any longer. People consume programming so differently in today's world. Unless you are the NFL, live programming is bleak.

The game was also on a Sunday night at 8:00pm. Like you said, unless you're the NFL, nobody is getting good ratings in that spot.
