Is the NBA Falling Off?

Featured Replies

Playoff basketball is almost a completely different game than what is played in the regular season. Regular season games on an intensity scale of 1-10 are probably a 6 maybe a 7. Playoff basketball on the same scale is a 15.

One way to reduce load management would be to reduce the number of teams getting in the playoffs. That would make the regular season games much more meaningful as playoff spots would become more precious. Players would be less inclined to just sit out, if there was a real possibility those games could mean staying home come playoff time.

  • If you can't find NBA games on TV, you aren't trying.

  • I would challenge you (or anybody) that has that mindset about the NBA to actually go to a game and sit in the lower bowl.

  • It's impossible to really grasp what the NBA is until you see it in person. After my first game, it completely changed how I view the league.

The season is too long. That's the main issue. But they'll never shorten it enough to eliminate the load management problem.

$$$$$$$$$

Simple solution. Allow fans, even season ticket holders, to get ticket refunds when active player is not going to play. Teams can put those tickets back for sale. That prevents fans from having cause for complaints. If too many tickets are being returned, the league will take action on load management.

This should be easy to do in the era of technology and electronic tickets.

The refund part is very easy. What isn’t, is what situation decides a refund is available? Is it any starter? If not who and what defines a marquee player? What constitutes not playing? Is there a minutes requirement and if so, how many? And once those things are defined, instead of not playing, the player just plays the minimum, and the fans still kind of get screwed. And even if all this stuff gets figured out, I still don’t think it’s fair that teams can’t employ some kind of load management and get penalized for managing the health of their biggest investment, without whom, there is no league.

My solution is all about the load management issue. These refunds should happen before the game is ever played. The team knows if they are going to sit a player to rest him. They announce it before the game. When they announce it, fans can return their tickets. Apply this to the team's top 5 players in minutes played. All about load management and not sticking it to the fans.
