AP Poll 1/2/23 - Update from Jason Frakes

Featured Replies

It requires so very little effort for them to vote. It’s incredible to me that they don’t.

If I believed it was due to them needing to put forth significant research to vote - and I’m sure some do - then I’d understand some failing to vote. But considering how many simply follow the win-loss slavishly, it should be an extremely simple task to vote. I know Frakes and Dennison were two that voted, so at least they had dedication.

Gotta take a person very seriously when they use slavishly in a sentence. I agree with the sentiment here but I'm guessing there's a little bit more to it than that. I heard at least one writer didn't vote because they were furloughed for the week and didn't want to work while not working. Gannett furloughed a lot of people in December and some KY people were part of that. Gannett said in the fall that it was going to pause 401(K) matching, introduce a mandatory five-day unpaid leave during the holidays (with two voluntary options: an adjusted workweek or unpaid sabbatical) and make an indefinite hiring freeze. Working for Gannett's LCJ, I'm pretty sure Frakes was furloughed as well but the man is dedicated to his job. Frakes has stood the test of time, so if he voted while on furlough, I wouldn't be surprised. But other furloughed peeps might have checked out for the week.

I certainly could see furloughs being the reason why.  And perhaps that's what Frakes was alluding to when he said that if it remains this way next week, that then it might be done.  Because I assume that holiday furloughs are over.

Gannett is a bane on the industry.  Journalism is dying.

Agree on Gannett. The business model never kept pace with the changing times. A lot of really capable people got out of Gannett sports, creating a brain drain, affecting quality. Regarding journalism dying, there's some pretty good journalism going on in here! So, not dying but maybe morphing into something new, shall we say. In my opinion, sites like Bluegrasspreps.com are the wave of the future, and that's going to rock a lot of boats.

This, and I grew up in a house of news staffers. Gannett is smothering local news (even though it now owns over 1,000 weekly papers) through cost-cutting. The two ply on a roll at my place has more substance. *Shareholders win, communities lose.*

Grateful for the folks at BGP for putting in the work to put out weekly statewide and regional rankings. We are the future and the future is here now.

Frakes was on furlough.

It's not that tough.  I'm a voting member in the 10th Region Media Poll.  There's 17 of us, and like clockwork, we vote every week.

This is the start of something good. I know and trust a lot of these names.

I anticipate this will be better than the AP Poll ever was. I just hope everyone keeps up with it. I love that they’ll be rating their regions as well.

That's good news.

This a good, solid bunch. Will be much better (IMO) than the AP Poll

Lots of familiar names that I read many articles from (and a few conversations to boot)! I like this and it should be a very good operation.

Assuming AP is different than the BGP rankings? If so, when will we have the newest BGP rankings?
