Pirates Try To "Buc" A Losing Trend In Their House Of Horrors

Records: Belfry (6-5) | Ashland (7-4)

BGP Ranking: Belfry (#9 in 3A) | Ashland (#8 in 3A)

Series History: Ashland leads 19-4 all-time

Table Setter: If Belfry football is the superman of 3A, Putnam Stadium is lined with kryptonite. The Pirates have lost seven straight there, spanning 33 years. It seems anytime they dock the ship along Ashland's riverfront, it's never carrying a team regarded as one of Belfry's strongest. That appears to be the case again this season.

The Pirates are never to be taken lightly in November, but they've limped - at times, literally - to a five loss season and their injury report for this week is unknown. They're coming to Ashland because they dropped the district for the first time in what seems like a generation. But they blew Russell off the field in the second half last week, without some key pieces. This was a Russell team that gave Ashland a fight a few weeks earlier.

Ashland was not favored to win its district, but the youthful Tomcats have grown up quickly. Sophomores LaBryant Strader (QB) and Braxton Jennings (RB/son of former Cleveland Brown Chris Jennings) have paced Ashland, offensively. This group will be a force to be reckoned with for the next few years.

The last time these two met, the Tomcats clamped down on Isaac Dixon to top Belfry in a defensive slugfest on their way to a state title. Look for a busier scoreboard this time.

  • This game may feature the youngest combined lineups in the state.  At times Belfry has had up to 7 freshmen on the field.  that's just unheard of.

  • I think Ashland is the 3A sleeper this year.

I think Belfry will escape but it won't be easy to win. This is Belfry's best chance in a while to come out of Putnam with the Win.

I think Belfry has a chance to win this game, they have improved from week 1 greatly.

But, Ashland is not the same Ashland in week 12 that they were in week 1 either.  As you did great job of illustrating, the Tomcats are young, and they have matured over the season and no longer as young as they were at the beginning of the season.

I think it will end-up being a great game, but I would give the edge to Ashland at home and being the preverbal monkey on the back of the Pirates.

I agree, at this point in time.  In week 1 I thought they were a year or two away.  But, their young talent has matured quickly and their sophomores are now playing like juniors.  I think they could surprise some teams.

If the young cats keep their focus and  execution it promises to be a great game. If it’s close in the 4th quarter I like Ashland’s chances of winning but if Belfry gets more of their key players back it could easily be a 2 score advantage to the pirates.
