Cooper 35 Beechwood 12 (Frosh)

Final. Big games again for Ryker Campbell and Keagan Maher.

Beechwood is a very well coached team and plays extremely hard. Which they have a lot of 8th graders too. I would say they probably will be the early favorite to be the best freshman team in NKY next year. They should be really good next year.

Cooper has a good freshman team. Campbell is a strong runner. Maher also is a good back. Solid group of players. They have enough with the other young players ahead of them on varsity to be one of Cooper's better teams in a couple years.

FC, is it common for 8th graders to play on freshman teams?

Agreed. They have a nice mix of freshman coming up to mix in with a lot of the sophomores and juniors currently playing varsity.

Campbell is actually a stud WR and is his most natural position after playing it his whole life. However, with Freshman QB Cam O’Hara playing varsity all year, Cooper hasn’t always been able to get him the ball consistently as a wide out. So him as a wildcat QB is also very dangerous because as you mentioned with how strong he runs. He and Maher have taken turns breaking off many long plays this year offensively and on special teams. There are also many other good players on Coopers freshman team, but them two are definitely their two studs.

It is not uncommon, and teams sometimes will have an 8th grader or two if they are really good players. I know Cooper before this year, usually had an 8th grader or two play freshman as well. Its not typically normal to see as many 8th graders as Beechwood has playing freshman this year. However, with Beechwood being a smaller school, it helps give them better numbers at the freshman level. Plus a lot of those 8th graders are pretty good players. So playing freshman this year, is going to really speed up their development and will put them really ahead of the game for next year.

Beechwood’s freshman team will be really good and extremely motivated next year. They thumped everyone last year, in respectable fashion, but teams are getting their digs in this year, which is expected.

However, I can promise you this, the 8th graders and coaches won’t forget the onside kick with less than two minutes remaining in a 35-13 game, Coach.

If you were Cooper, would you kick the ball to Tyler Fryman? Seriously. He is arguably the best player in freshman football in N. Ky.

I thought when they played CCH, Cooper had 2 RB/WR types that were really, really good with the ball in their hands. I’m assuming these are the guys. The Jags should be a handful over the next few years with the young talent they have.

Beechwood has a combined 6th and 7th grade team and also a combined 8th and 9th grade team.

There were several other options in terms of avoiding Fryman. No need to do that at that point in the game. None. It won't be forgotten by anyone on that sideline, I can assure you of that.

Agree with you, however, on Fryman. There are alot of really talented freshmen level players this year, but Fryman is the best I've seen. The amazing thing is what he's been able to accomplish given every single defensive coordinator knows Beechwood is going to keep going to him. They double him, he still catches the ball. They put their best corners on him who stick to him like glue, he out jumps them and makes the catch.

His second TD last night was an off tackle play that looked like it was going to be stopped after a short gain, but he exploded around the edge and outraced 2 Cooper fast DB's for a 57-yard TD. Not many kids can get the edge and explode the way he did on that play.

Correct those two players were Maher and Campbell. Maher is the running back, Campbell is a WR that also gets used as a wildcat QB at times.

If I were the Freshman coaches at Beechwood. Especially after having a day to think back on the game and calm down. I would ask what was more likely in that scenario.  Was it more likely that Cooper called for a squib kick like they did right before half, and the freshman  kicker just missed kicked it and  it ended up looking like an onside kick when it wasn’t suppose to be. As evident by the fact Cooper didn’t try to do anything with it and put their second string in right after the kick and proceeded to run four plays right up the middle for a total of 3 yards to give the ball back to Beechwood.

Or if Cooper did intentionally onside kick it. Why would Cooper then turn around and put their backups in right after. If a team was going to onside kick on purpose, then you would think that team most likely wouldn’t pull all the starting offense and would then try to score again if a team was going to onside kick on purpose.

If Beechwood coaches want to think that and use that for motivation. That is their right, even though they would be wrong since it was suppose to be a squib kick. So, if they even take a second to think about it rationally, and how Cooper put their second string immediately after and didn’t even attempt to do anything with it. It’s not hard to see it was more of a freshman kicker not squib kicking it right, rather than an intentional onside kick. Which if Beechwood coaches look at the opening kickoff to the game, they will notice who is at kicker when Cooper did do an intentional onside kick. So if Cooper was going to onside kick on purpose, that kicker who started the game would have been in for it, which he wasn’t. Very similar to how Beechwood had one kicker do their onside kick, and another kicker come in when they were trying to squib it and or kick it deeper.

I believe Beechwood has played almost if not all 8th graders on the Freshman team the last several years. Their middle school team in the NKMSAA has only fielded a 7th grade team in recent years.

I could be wrong but I believe last years loaded freshman team was mostly freshman. At least the ones who were the starters.
