Cooper 35 Beechwood 12 (Frosh)

I believe Beechwood has played almost if not all 8th graders on the Freshman team the last several years. Their middle school team in the NKMSAA has only fielded a 7th grade team in recent years.

This is correct. Beechwood's freshman team is composed of all 8th graders and freshmen at the school. The Tigers' one middle school team is composed of all 6th and 7th graders.

It is not uncommon, and teams sometimes will have an 8th grader or two if they are really good players. I know Cooper before this year, usually had an 8th grader or two play freshman as well. Its not

There were several other options in terms of avoiding Fryman. No need to do that at that point in the game. None. It won't be forgotten by anyone on that sideline, I can assure you of that.

Agree with you, however, on Fryman. There are alot of really talented freshmen level players this year, but Fryman is the best I've seen. The amazing thing is what he's been able to accomplish given every single defensive coordinator knows Beechwood is going to keep going to him. They double him, he still catches the ball. They put their best corners on him who stick to him like glue, he out jumps them and makes the catch.

His second TD last night was an off tackle play that looked like it was going to be stopped after a short gain, but he exploded around the edge and outraced 2 Cooper fast DB's for a 57-yard TD. Not many kids can get the edge and explode the way he did on that play.

Fryman is the best 8th grader, not the best Frosh. Hard to put him ahead of Maher, Campbell, O'Hara, Verax, Savage, Lee, Lyons, Coppola, Litmer, and Harney. No knock on him. He's an incredible athlete and great kid. Those others just have a year on him age wise.

Look out next year, though.

Absolutely agree with you!

I could be wrong but I believe last years loaded freshman team was mostly freshman. At least the ones who were the starters.

They may have been loaded with Freshman. But I can tell you for certain, they didn't have an 8th grade team playing in the NKMSAA, and haven't since 2018 or 2019. Unless those 8th graders played somewhere else, they had to have played on the freshman team.

Got ya. This years 8th grade group is really good, and as I stated earlier. They probably have to be the early favorites to be the best freshman team in NKY next year.

Respectfully disagree.

Have seen six of the players you listed. He’s better and more dominant than four of them.

You’re right though…fantastic young man, incredible athlete and a very bright future.

Weren’t they all 7th graders last year tho?  They lost to both highlands and covcath and didn’t make the NKMSAA playoffs. Nothing against them, but I fail to see what has to make them the favorite. Because they play on the freshman football team?

I'm curious which four you have seen that you say that he is better and more dominant?

If I were the Freshman coaches at Beechwood. Especially after having a day to think back on the game and calm down. I would ask what was more likely in that scenario.  Was it more likely that Cooper called for a squib kick like they did right before half, and the freshman  kicker just missed kicked it and  it ended up looking like an onside kick when it wasn’t suppose to be. As evident by the fact Cooper didn’t try to do anything with it and put their second string in right after the kick and proceeded to run four plays right up the middle for a total of 3 yards to give the ball back to Beechwood.

Or if Cooper did intentionally onside kick it. Why would Cooper then turn around and put their backups in right after. If a team was going to onside kick on purpose, then you would think that team most likely wouldn’t pull all the starting offense and would then try to score again if a team was going to onside kick on purpose.

If Beechwood coaches want to think that and use that for motivation. That is their right, even though they would be wrong since it was suppose to be a squib kick. So, if they even take a second to think about it rationally, and how Cooper put their second string immediately after and didn’t even attempt to do anything with it. It’s not hard to see it was more of a freshman kicker not squib kicking it right, rather than an intentional onside kick. Which if Beechwood coaches look at the opening kickoff to the game, they will notice who is at kicker when Cooper did do an intentional onside kick. So if Cooper was going to onside kick on purpose, that kicker who started the game would have been in for it, which he wasn’t. Very similar to how Beechwood had one kicker do their onside kick, and another kicker come in when they were trying to squib it and or kick it deeper.

Thanks, I’ll let the coaches know that the opening kick was a planned onside kick but the last kick, with the ball laying on its side on the tee, the kicker approaching the ball at an angle towards the sideline and he kicked it spinning like a top directly where it was aimed, was an accident. Gotcha Coach.

Players get better the older they get. Plus those now 8th graders are not only on the freshman team, but actually playing and competing really well against actual freshman. So yes them playing football this year, does a lot more to better prepare them for freshman football next year. Than the players who are just playing 8th grade football still this year.

Not always. IMO, people read way too much into middle school and Freshman football. What happens at these levels does not always indicate future performance. I can't tell you how many times ultra successful middle school freshman teams end up being just average varsity teams and vice versa. Some kids mature later, some sooner. Kids transfer in and out, some quite playing, some don't start playing until later. Sure it's fun to speculate, but you just never know how 13-14-15 years olds will develop and what they will be when they are 17-18.

There are 8th graders playing freshman ball at places other than Beechwood, see Highlands. I’m not here to tout Highlands or a bunch of 13 year olds. But on paper, this group has not lost to another NKY school in 2 years, and in all likelihood will have back to back undefeated NKMSAA seasons a week or two from now, with no games this season being close. That’s all.

This can not be overstated!  Thank you!

No problem. While you are at it, have them take a look at the kickoff after Cooper scored right before half with 20 seconds before half time. Do you think Cooper was attempting an onside kick there too? Take a look at how the ball was placed on its side for that kick too, and notice how it was a squib kick to the right, and in fact squibed kicked it out of bounds about 25 yards down field because he kicked it to hard on the ground to the right. So yeah I guess it’s to hard to understand that the kicker probably tried to take a little off of it to avoid kicking out of bounds again, and ended up kicking it way to soft. I know a freshman player making a mistake is unheard of right?  Also seriously again take even a second to think what would the point be for Cooper to put their second string in immediately, if they were trying to onside kick on purpose? Wouldn’t they keep starters in and actually try to do something with the onside kick, if they were truly trying to kick an onside kick on purpose to get the ball?

It’s truly not hard to believe that a kicker didn’t kick a ball right or how they were suppose to. Just like I would assume the Beechwood coaches wouldn’t have wanted their punter to punt the ball directly to Campbell, yet their punter did anyways.

I get it though, it’s always a lot easier for people these days to try to find reasons to be angry. Rather than even take a second to actually think about what may have happened.
