As a Junior in high school I was fortunate to go to a NKY coaches clinic, to show something’s we did at NCC. I got to hear Mike Yeagle give a talk and I was pumped up. Then Dale Mueller followed and I was ready to run through a brick wall. It wasn’t a loud and booming voice, it was a calm smooth talk that just made you want to go run a million miles. Hard to explain unless you’ve heard him talk. Mueller took a very good program to THE program and it’s hard for people realize schools like that do have a past that wasn’t a state title every year.

I believe Mueller would have similar success at Trinity. Would Beatty have similar success at Highlands?

Hard to say.

Most impressive thing about Beatty was that in 20 years he only lost one time in post season when he was favored, and he won multiple state championships as an underdog.

His accomplishments will never be matched again, IMO.

So the coaches aren’t that good? It is all talent? I am not personally familiar with these 2 coaches but have been told that Mueller made lesser talent believe they were better and made them very successful. 

I think both programs where great under those coaches.  Both impressive.  Head to head of course you got to say Trinity would have beat them most years, and they should.  Pound for pound not even close Highlands to be that dominant for that long, not at what I'd call a small school, but a much smaller school than Trinity is impressive.

Yes. There was some real talent, but Dale had the mediocre talent kids thinking they were superheroes. In high school football confidence goes a long long way. Give me an average kid ready to run through a brick wall on fire over a talented kid that is meh any day.

To piggyback off of this a little... The current landscape of Jefferson County football has the potential to hinder Trinity's return to their previous heights. The resurgence of St. X under Wallace, the remarkable consistency of Male under Wolfe, and the buzz of optimism around Manual and Ballard, combined with the timing of Beatty's exit have conspired to knock the Shamrocks down a peg or two. A lot has changed in under two years.

I'm not sure Highlands has to contend with the challenges Trinity has in front of and around it.

I’m not sure about that. Talent is big don’t get me wrong.  Sometimes a less talented team wins though…. At the high school level believing trumps everything. Go back and watch when Highlands beat Cincy St X and look at the match ups. One team believed all the way to their bones. One team played like the lives of their families depended on winning the game. That is from coaching.

Not really.  We’ve won titles with lesser talent, and we’ve won with elite talent.  It just is more impressive when we have the elite talent.

Give me a team with good talent and good or decent coaching and I'll beat your team with lesser talent 9 out of 10 times.

It's not the coaching. T has good coaching.

Trinity is no longer getting nearly every single talented 8th grader in Louisville like they were doing for years and years under Beatty.
