LeBron's Lakers

Recommended Posts

I don't really watch the NBA much, but I still follow along through Twitter.  Looks like the Lakers are officially out of even the play-in games for the playoffs this year.  Saw something last night that said the last four years, they've missed the playoff twice, lost in the first round once and won the title during the bubble year, which some think should have an asterix (I'm not one that thinks it should).

Can it be fixed before LeBron leaves to play with Bronny in a few years?

It's been a bizarre tenure for LeBron, that is for sure. The problem is they mortgaged a ton to get him (which made sense) and Klutch... I mean the Lakers... mortgaged their future by getting Davis and the utterly stupid move of taking on Russell Westbrook. Injuries have been a problem for LeBron and Davis this season, but that was to be expected. LeBron shouldn't be expected to go all out as much as has been needed and Davis is always nicked. The bubble was a blessing because it gave them an extended break before heading to Orlando and they were able to take advantage. Even that makes this four year run so bizarre. They win a title, no fan gets to watch any games live, no parade, etc.

The Lakers "Big 3" puts them over the projected salary cap, which means they are filling the roster around them with mid-level exception and minimum salary guys. The scoring record is in reach for LeBron which is what the focus is on at this time. I ain't hating on him for that. His scoring average this season has been impressive given his age, but his assist numbers are down, which is more of a barometer to how his teams are doing.

Westbrook is going to make $47MM next season. There is typically a sucker out there, but he is not exactly a hot commodity that teams will want to give up assets for.

The title makes it all worth it, if you ask me.  But, if the organization continues to let LeBron play GM, then I would not expect a much different result in future seasons.  LeBron is still great and has plenty left in the tank.  I do not trust Davis, based on his injury history, so I would look to move him, if they can find the right partner.  Based on salary alone, I would also look to move Westbrook, again, assuming they can find the right partner.  Personally, if LeBron is no longer interested in playing only (and not being GM), then I would look to move on from him too.  I guess what I am saying is....I would blow it up and move on.  Build through the draft for a few seasons and sign the right guys to fit the system.  Lakers will always be able to sign free agents, so I do not think it would take long for them to rebuild.  The key is to figure out the system you want to run and filling in with the right guys.  Right now, they do nothing well.  Offense is slow and not efficient.  No one guards and I mean no one!  No inside presence.  Does not feel like a team, just individuals.

I thought this was one of LeBron's greatest accomplishments.

The Westbrook move will go down as one of the worst ever. On top of everything else, Derozan wanted to join LA and the Lakers/LeBron/AD chose Westbrook. Derozan is from LA and played at USC.

LeGM gets what he wants, and then blames other people for the results.

"This ain't my fault. I'm averaging 30 ppg. The GM is responsible for the personnel and Vogel can't coach squat."

The problem is LeBron is now at the point of his career where he needs another top shelf player to carry the physical load whereas before he could drag along subpar talent. He can score points because he is a physical specimen and in good shape for 37, but it is at the expense of being a more effective team player and whatever defense he is capable of playing (which is very little these days). His game has drifted further out to the three point line where he is a below average shooter, but he continues to fire away at 8 per game.

To nobody's surprise, Vogel is out as the head coach, because that is how this works in the NBA.

When asked about his relationship with Vogel, who at times during the season benched Westbrook for the fourth quarter of games, he replied: “I’m not sure what his issue was with me.

When I first got here, I just felt that I never was given a fair chance just to be who I need to be to better help this team."

Um, maybe it was the fact you lead the league in turnovers, worst three pointer shooter in the league, and fourth worst FT shooter in the league?

I get that but somebody had to win it and the Lakers did.  And without Shaq, Kobe, or Magic I am not a Lakers fan.

If anyone but the Lakers/LeBron had won then folks would be celebrating that 2020 champion like they do the rest.  But the Lakers won soooooooo……..
