Louisville Hires Kenny Payne

The biggest knock for him is he has zero head coaching experience. If he's able to land elite recruits (Hey, DJ Wagner), his acclimation probably is a little more smooth than someone else's might be.

If DJ Wagner goes to Louisville over Kentucky, things will definitely get a lot more interesting in the Bluegrass State.

  • He is absolutely killing this press conference. I'm sold.

  • We'll see if it actually happens. If he's not on staff, I see no reason DJ would go to Louisville.

When Cal was asked about it... "First of all, he’s a dear friend, They could not hire anybody that will do a better job than Kenny Payne. Great coach, great human being, great husband, great fath

Milt Wagner is rumored to potentially be on KP's staff. If  that comes to fruition, no chance DJ goes to UK.

Hadn't heard about that angle of it.

Let's keep him off the Cardinal's staff then lol

Payne is probably the best UL can do right now considering the state of their program.

It’s a high risk high reward hire. Zero head coaching experience but most assume he will be able to recruit at a high level. That’s yet to be seen without the backing of UK/Cal/Nike.

I actually hope it works out for UL. Bluegrass basketball is much more fun when UL is competitive.

If it doesn’t work out, UL runs the risk of mirroring Indiana.

If it’s Payne, I wouldn’t consider it a home run hire, but still a good one. I genuinely don’t think they could have done much better currently.

Unless you’re poaching away a proven winner, coaching changes are always a crapshoot.

I think Kenny Payne is a fantastic hire if UL can get him.  He would likely be at the top of my list if Cal left UK.

I am cautiously optimistic. If he can recruit like everyone thinks he can, UofL will quickly be back in the fold.

Wasn't Milt on Cal's staff at Memphis when Dejuan was being recruited?   Any chance Cal hires him again?  LOL

UK's guys all loved him.  I think he had a big hand in developing so many quality big men.

He's going to UK unless Milt would be on staff somewhere such as Louisville.

I wonder how many head coaching jobs KP has turned down?  The fact that he hasn't been a head coach is because he has chosen not to be a head coach.

He has had 1 million or more reasons for a while now, to put in work and be a quality ambassador for HIGH quality pressure packed organizations and not take lower level crap shoot jobs.

There are reasons why Nick Saban's coordinators are in high demand as Head Coaches.  I am surprised you don't see more high profile schools poaching lead assistants from Blue Blood schools.

I agree that KP could have had a job before now. He was purposefully being selective, as any coach should be IMO.

Yeah I think he had several opportunities before jumping to the Knicks but didn't pursue them.
