Team Captains At Coin Toss

Featured Replies

I know that certain regions of the state do things a little differently than other regions especially in the last 2 years. One of the things I’ve noticed is the elimination of captains and the HC meeting with the Referee at midfield for the coin toss. Some regions have just the 2 HCs meeting with the white hat for the toss without the team captains.
I was wondering if the KHSAA has established a standard way to conduct the toss. It was always an honor to be selected a captain and to represent your team at the toss. A lot of times being selected was a way to reward a player (usually someone who doesn’t get a lot of playing time) for a good week of practice.  Now, for the most part, walking to midfield as a captain has been eliminated from the game.
Here’s hoping that this tradition makes a return for the 2022 season.

COVID, I think changed some of that stuff, but I think that should get back to normal.

You couldn't meet up for the coin toss because of the threat of catching covid but 5 minutes later can line up directly across from each other and breath/tackle the same exact person you couldn't do the toss with. That rule made sense ?

Can I ask why it needs to go back to normal? I think a meet-up between both head coaches and the head referee works fine. When the players go on the field, the coaches are still making all of the decisions on kick/receiver, defend, etc. It seems like players on the field is more ceremonial than anything else.

To me its part of the game, walking out there and representing your team,  your town, you earned that. Also I think it represents respect and sportsmanship. Just one mans opinion.

Understand and can agree with all of that.

Team that travels has the option.

Coin toss a good of 6 minutes.

I like the HC's meeting with the White hat and umpire...

They meet during pre game already

Agreed. Captains can still be recognized as captains and serve the same purpose and value without participating in the coin toss. It’s strictly ceremonial these days and really serves very little value.

Coaches literally make every decision nowadays. When and where I played in the mid to late 80’s coaches didn’t go out on the field for the toss. and captains were asked about accepting or declining penalties. Not sure if it was like that here in KY.

When the late Owen Hauck was at Boone County and the late Bob Lewis at Conner we always did the coin toss with them pregame shortly after meeting with each individually. Down on sidelines about 20 yard line. We then walked players out shortly before start of game and simulated the toss. Those two guys loved that! Two great coaches....and some hilarious conversations!!

Indeed, so why not kill two birds with one stone and go ahead and knock that out...?

Only at state championships they do coin flips with captains would be ok with me.

It was....but we always looked to the bench as did the captain of the offended team. Saved some problems. When we went to the defer option on the toss had a young man tell me "Sir, we would like to defraud"...told him that wasn't happening because we'd all go to jail lol.

They need to do it because of tradition. Why does everyone want to change the game. It’s like the NFL moving the extra point back why, because they say it’s to easy it’s supposed to be easy it’s only worth one point and it’s rewarding the team for driving for a touchdown or them wanting to eliminate the kickoff that’s so stupid the game was built with these rules quit changing stuff if it ain’t broke don’t fix it and the game ain’t broke.

If football (or any other sport or business) took that attitude, things would never improve and we'd never see advances. Not all tradition is good or necessary. If that was the right path we'd still be wearing leather helmets on the football and riding horses to work instead of driving cars.
