Murray coach to Louisville?

Recruiting, that's about it from the way I see it.

Him having played at Louisville does nothing for me.

Payne was getting kids to play for UK/Cal, same kid might not want to play for UL/Payne.

This is where I was when Travis Ford was a hot name to replace Billy G.

I don’t really understand Duke and North Carolina being so adamant on keeping it in the family.

I don’t really care if the guy after Cal can point out Kentucky on a map. Just be a decent guy and win games…

It did work out pretty good with Joe Hall.

That's like me watching surgeon operate, could I perform the same operation?  The answer would be no.  Hiring Payne would be the same gamble as hiring a mid major coach.

Not even remotely comparable.

I can assure you the overwhelming majority of kids he recruited to UK didn’t go there just because it was UK…

I didn't say UK alone, I said UK/Cal

Thank you for understanding what I was saying. Your Walt Hazzard one is good. Harrick made the leap from Pepperdine, so that is a good one too, although he had previously been an assistant at UCLA. Again, it is incredibly rare.

Don't forget Bruce Pearl, how many have passed thru Butler a few years back?

Payne has as many ties to the NBA as Cal, I’m not at all concerned about him getting players.

Joe Hall is an interesting situation. You never want to follow the main guy; I wasn’t alive so I have no idea who might have wanted to follow Rupp but I’m sure there would have been some trepidation. Going to Louisville, no matter where from, is quite different from Rupp/Hall.

Hall didn't go directly from Central MO to be the head coach at UK did he?   I thought he was a Rupp assistant for a number of years.

Yes, he was an assistant to Rupp, the reply was about hiring from in house.

What?

What?

Pearl went from Southern Indiana (DII) to Wisconsin-Milwaukee to Tennessee.  And even though he ran into NCAA issues there, there is no doubt that he was successful on the court.

Butler, I can't name many.   Stephenson went from there to the NBA.   Thad Matta went from Butler to Xavier and then to Ohio State.

Again, I can cite hundreds of examples of coaches going from a (low tier) mid-major to a typical Power 6 school. That’s not what I’m talking about. Had Pearl went from UW Milwaukee to North Carolina, you would have a point.

Those teams don't make coaching changes.  K was at Duke 42 years, Dean Smith was at NC for 36 years.  UK has had what, 7 coaches since the 1940s?  So if it's not Carolina, Duke, UK or UCLA it doesn't count?

Exactly my point. And when these schools make their hires, they go with known commodities. To bring this full circle and back on topic, Matt McMahon has been an assistant at App State, UNC Willimington, Murray State, then ascended to the head role at MSU. Anything is possible, but for him to go straight to UL would be uncommon.
