From the sound of things, it appears this kid has not been happy for quite some time.  With that said, who or what was keeping him from leaving over the last several years?  Also doesn’t sound like he had too many friends outside of basketball team?

No dog in the fight whatsoever but at the end of the day, does it really matter why he left?  The young man is gone, he will be fine, CCH will be fine, leave it at that.  The 9th is going to be competitive next season regardless if the young man was there or not.  There are several good teams that will be vying to take this region next year.

I agree and I also think this is a good ending point.
