Jim Farley had the undefeated first season and then moved to Florida. It would have been interesting to see what would have happened if he had stayed.

 

He was an All-State running back during the WWII years at Danville High School and had been awarded a scholarship to UK. Due to a knee injury, UK didn’t work out but he did play some college football as a 190 pound offensive tackle at Centre College.

 

Dennis Sexton had good success from '64 to '66. Wonder what the reason was for his departure. The truth is that it seems Jim Greer (like John Griggs a couple of decades later) set Boyle football back.

Until the Lone Oak double OT State game I considered this the best Boyle County game I ever saw.

 

It was one of the best I saw but I don't know if it was better than:

 

1976 - 28-27 over Henry Clay.

1976 - 20-14 over Harrodsburg on the "Princeton Pass" to end the game

1979 - 27-17 over Somerset after trailing by 10 at halftime at the Jumpers

The great game I remember the best was 10/10/1969, Boyle 8, Danville 6. The Rebels won on a blocked punt/safety in the endzone at Centre College. Considering 0-10 seasons in 67 & 68, it was a huge win over an Admiral team that included Leonard Coulter.

 

 

I can't begin to describe how wonderful the 1969 season was at Boyle. I can't begin to describe how horrific the 1970 season became after the death of Robert Allen Yankey. It went from a fairy tale to a nightmare.

 

Robert Allen was a great young man and an inspiration to so many, and still is for many of us to this day.

Dennis Sexton was born in Belleville, Illinois on August 28, 1937. Sexton was the first Boyle County coach to stay more than one season. He stayed two years. He was 6-2-2 in 1965 and 7-1-2 in 1966. He came to Boyle County from Mt. Morris High School in Illinois, where he had served as the head line coach.

 

He played at Belleville Junior College, Illinois during his freshman year. Then he was a famed wingback at Ole Miss his Sophomore and Junior seasons before finishing his Senior season at McKindrick College. He played minor league baseball in the St. Louis Cardinals organization in 1961 and 1962 and batted for an average of .320 and .298 during the two seasons.

 

On January 17, 1967, it was announced that he was leaving Boyle County to take the head football coach's job at Madisonville. Perhaps he left to be closer to Illinois.

 

He coached Madisonville football from 1967-1971 (5 seasons 45-15). In 1972, he became the head coach at Evansville Central in Evansville, Indiana. He coached there until 1980, compiling a 46-42 record in 9 seasons. He continued teaching and coaching golf after resigning as football coach.

 

He died in Evansville, Indiana on December 12, 2004.

 

Interestingly, his daughter, Kim, was married to former New York Yankee player Don Mattingly, of Evansville. Kim spent her first couple of years in Danville. They are now divorced

Ed was a better football coach than he ever got credit for.  The resources at that time were almost non existent compared to Boyle today.  3 or 4 stipends a year at most.  Was pretty successful as OC at Centre for a number of years !!  Good man !!

I remember those great teams of Coach Sexton as a kid in Madisonville. Two straight State Runners-Up with running backs Sonny Collins and Larry Jones. Collins broke his ankle the first game of the season in 1971 but the Maroons, behind Jones, advanced to the final game. If I remember correctly, lost to Highlands in 1970 and Bryan Station in 1971. I think Coach Sexton moved to Evansville Central the following year.

Coach Rall will never know how much he means to me.   I am so grateful to have played for him, Greg Young, Ken Cutrer, and Bill Ware.

I had Coach Sexton's playbook. My Dad found it when he became the head coach at Boyle. I kept it for 53 years. Finally, 2022, gave it Boone Goldsmith.  

I got alot of great football stuff. Don't want to part with it. But, if I give it away to people that appreciate it, my family won't throw away great stuff when I die.

Please note that this is unofficial, but I pulled it out of an old yearbook. I saw the earlier post that stated that the Glasgow game was a loss, so I will recheck my source to see if I may have gotten it reversed. Also, I saw that the Coach in 1964 was someone named Willard Davis, although I cannot confirm this.

From the Herald-Leader in August 1964. Davis had been an assistant coach the year prior on head coach Jim Farley's staff.

Coach Bernard Brandt was an assistant at Madisonville-North and became head coach after Coach Sexton departed. Wasn’t he from Danville?
