Voice of Reason Posted October 3, 2021 Posted October 3, 2021 The race for home field and the number 2 seed in 2A is going to be an interesting one to follow. Beechwood closed the gap significantly with a win over a 6A opponent this week but Mayfield still has the lead in KHSAA RPI. Following these numbers week by week will be a good study in how KHSAA RPI works. Voice of Reason Posted October 9, 2021 Author Posted October 9, 2021 This coming week(10/15): Mayfield plays Ballard Memorial (RPI .32428), the weakest team left on their schedule. Beechwood plays Lloyd Memorial (RPI .44336) Assuming both win, Beechwood should extend their lead over Mayfield in RPI. The next week (10/22) Mayfield plays Murray and Beechwood plays Newport. Assuming both win, Mayfield should gain some points because Murray is a better RPI by about .15 above Newport. It will be very close heading into the last game. The final games are Beechwood vs. 1A Newport Catholic (RPI currently .59470; record 5-2) and Mayfield at 4A Madisonville-North Hopkins (RPI currently .41772; record 2-6). Looking at the records and RPI most of us would think advantage Beechwood. However, this is where the biggest flaw in KHSAA RPI will show itself. Because Madisonville-North Hopkins is a 4A school, Mayfield will gain RPI points. Record doesn't matter much. RPI of the opponent doesn't matter much. Simply because Mayfield beats a 4A school they will get extra points in RPI.

Bud_Kilmer Posted October 9, 2021 Posted October 9, 2021 1 minute ago, theguru said: The RPI is flawed. Very! Someone has to explain why Butler County is so high, as well as Hancock and McLean. I mean, come on now! Surely it will all get balanced out by end of year. I know your top 3 is clear, but huge problems below that. do you get more credit for beating a horrible team that is several classes larger than you than for beating a good school of the same size?

Bud_Kilmer Posted October 9, 2021 Posted October 9, 2021 To me it seems the best strategy for RPI among smaller schools who are decent is to schedule as many 5A and 6A cupcakes as possible. And they are out there especially in the western part of the state.
snakesnot_2000 Posted October 9, 2021 Posted October 9, 2021 What you're saying is that if Mayfield and Beechwood wins out then Beechwood is going to travel.

snakesnot_2000 Posted October 9, 2021 Posted October 9, 2021 Mayfield and Beechwood are both going to win out.
snakesnot_2000 Posted October 9, 2021 Posted October 9, 2021 Mayfield can beat Beechwood at home. Away I'll give them about a 30% chance.
Brown Posted October 9, 2021 Posted October 9, 2021 From what I have seen and the scores I do not think Mayfield can win either at home or away. 1
