This game is going to be a Thursday night game that also starts at 6:30pm. Douglass comes into the game at 6-0 while Grant County is 0-6. This will make the 3rd time the two teams have played. Frederick Douglass is 2-0 all-time vs Grant Co. and have outscored them 118-0 in those two meetings. I really don't see anything to be different with this years game. The Broncos are coming off a good 35-0 win over rival Scott County last week, while the Braves are coming off a 49-34 loss to Montgomery Co. on the road.

They went to see a movie instead of trying to work out or plan vs Male? I guess "We will play anyone, anytime and anywhere' statement is out.

  • Playing Devils Advocate to your Devils Advocate.. Is it possible the lack of playing good teams is truly what has costed FD the last few years? When your starters are barely playing full games it

It's weird watching the Braves play, the past two years they never punt, they just turn it over on downs. I am curious about that philosophy. This is one of those games you want first string to execute the gameplan, and get off the field quickly to escape injury. The Grant County field is not the best maintained field in these parts, so you hope no one will step in the potholes that are present there.

Respectfully to GHS, Douglass U should not even dress varsity team for this one. Save them from possible injuries from the gawd awful field.

Some schools don’t punt because running another offensive play is safer. If a team like Douglas wanted to come after a kick what do you think the odds are they would get a block or the punt never get off? Who does a team like Douglas have returning punts? What are the better odds? Running another play or kicking to one of the best athletes on the field with space and pretty darn good athletes blocking for them. What do teams practice more offense or punting?

No clue if that is the complete thinking but those are some reasons don’t do it. Franklin Simpson I think the last time they won state didn’t punt. They did line up like a field goal and used that instead of punting.

Really, is this thread necessary?

It would be nice if there was a thread for every game.

I post this because I was asked to do this for each game of the season and I said I would and am glad to do it. I really think a lot of this site and always do whatever I can to help to make it the best it can be.

Plus, you must really like to follow the Douglass threads as you always have to post something on each one so I guess it does serve a purpose because you evidentially read everyone of them.

Finally, you can go back while it has been rare over the past 5 years but I have always posted on every Douglass loss as well. I could say that you have to say something negative towards Douglass to make you sleep good at night, but I won't ?. Best of luck to your team!

Thanks I appreciate the kind words DMC. I kept this thread a lot shorter than one vs a good team. Douglass schedule is pretty weak (Great Crossing is improved) from now until Boyle Co. game and I can promise as long as I have a good phone service that I will post a final score thread win or lose. Thanks again!

This is definitely the safest approach to a game like this. Get the starters enough reps to get the clock running before mass substitutions. Maybe start subbing younger kids in a little at a time mixed with the starters before the running clock.

But at the same time, Douglass' starters needs to go full tilt while they're out there. Anything less can increase the chances of injury.

He told Douglass coach he may actually try to kick quick some but said the reason why he don't punt he does not have anyone who can.

There have been good coaches with good teams that refrained from punting as much as possible.

Joe Jaggers was famous for - so long as his North Hardin Trojans team had crossed midfield - never punting.   Even if the ball was on the other team's 49 1/2 yard line, the Trojans didn't punt on fourth down.

Of course, he usually had some pretty serious athletes and a team that could threaten to convert most fourth downs, but he stuck to his mantra pretty religiously, as I recall, regardless of the down or distance and the game situation.

OK, makes sense lol. I didn't know that was the issue!
