South Warren will travel back up to Louisville in consecutive weeks.

South Warren (3-1) picked up their third win of the year against 6A Eastern 44-6.  This game was a

Covid reschedule at the last minute as South Warren couldn't even secure buses for the game.

But good job to get it in during these trying times.

Last Week:  I don't have any stats at this point, but know Eastern is middle of the road at best from a 6A standpoint and 

South Warren is a very good 5A team that didn't struggle against the Eagles, as expected.

Spartans vs Yellow Jackets:  This will be the 3rd matchup of these schools.  The first was a dandy in the 3A 2014 playoffs

where South had opportunities but just couldn't cash in and fell 16-14 at Central in the semi-final round of the playoffs.  Central would

go on to lose in the Finals to Belfry 14-7.  The second matchup, also at Central, saw a young Caden Veltcamp take a hand injury, but 

still the Spartans would prevail 22-8.  They were supposed to play each other last season but Covid would win this round.

This Week:   Interesting game.  Central is not afraid to play anyone in the state.  They opened the season against 6A Top 10 schools Manual and St Xavier, which were loses, although they only lost to Manual 14-12.  They now have a 3 game win streak defeating 6A Butler and Fern Creek and 3A Belfry.  

South Warren's schedule is typical of past ones in that they schedule teams they think they can beat and have to stretch a little.  This fits that bill as South Warren is just a bad matchup for Central IMO.  Why?  Central is best running the ball.  On the season they have about 1,000 yards offense with 700 of those rushing.  That won't work against South Warren.  You have to be able to throw the ball and be balanced in order to have success against them IMO.  The exception was Hendersonville TN, but that's another story.

Who wins this game?  What are the keys to the game?

I think South Warren wins but Central has a good defense and the margin maybe closer than some think.

Will be a competitive game but Central will struggle to move the ball consistently. I’ll go South Warren 35-12. 

Watching Veltcamp the last 2 games, I don't think that there is any way that South doesn't have a running clock against Central before halftime. He has been able to pass at will and his receivers are making incredible plays. He's much better than advertised, when he has the time to pass. The only caveat is if somehow Central has some incredible pass rush. Hendersonville dominated South's offensive line and put enough pressure on Veltcamp that he couldn't do anything in the 2nd half of that game.

South's defense is top notch, for sure. Gibson Southern, who was picked by everyone to beat South, couldn't do anything until the JV went in and South was without their top tackler for that entire game, Burton. Eastern had arguably one of the top rushers in the state. They couldn't move the ball at all against South's starters.

Central had 30 passing yards and 139 rushing yards against Fern Creek. There is no possibility that they will be that successful against South's starters. Central's defense has had 8 total Tackles for Loss so far this season. South has had 41. There shouldn't be that much pressure on Veltcamp, which will translate into a big win for South.

My guess is that the final score is going to be somewhere around 44-7. Smith will put in the 2nd string guys as soon as we see a running clock.

SW by a lot. Also think SW is best team in 5A. 

Central for the upset.

This is not meant to shade Central, but if South Warren is a truly elite team this year, they'll go to Louisville and handle the Jackets with little trouble.

St. X beat Central 30-6 so I see a similar score for South Warren. Manual only beat them by 2. Central is good on D and challenged on offense.
