Do the Covington Catholic faithful feel a disconnect with the direction of the football and basketball programs? Is there less of a community feel?  Was there ever?  Is there animosity from locals about it becoming a commuter school for Ohio kids that could care less about Park Hills, Covington, or the surrounding areas?  Maybe this has always been the case, I really don’t know. This isn’t the way I remember the colonels fielding teams back in the day, so I wondered how fans feel about it. Or if they even care as long as they win.

I’m not implying any wrong doing. I’m just curious if the fans still feel like it’s a community team. Where kids growing up in the area want to go ,and take pride in. Or is there a belief that it’s not worth it because the school doesn’t want that anymore.

My two cents…. Football program has the same feel/support. Basketball is a different story IMO.

I'm not sure why these questions pertain to the football program.  I don't see what has changed.

The basketball program definitely has changed.  I'm sure people have varied opinions on it.  At the end of the day, the stands are always packed, it is an awesome venue, and they seem focused on continuing to elevate the status of this program.  If a kid plays basketball and wants to play in high school, you have to make a decision on your opportunity to play at CCH vs. another school.  I don't see how that is different from kids choosing Trinity vs. St. X in Louisville, or St. X vs. Moeller in Cincinnati.

Is there animosity from other schools?  Animosity might be a strong word.   Again, in terms of football, people love to hate on CCH and Highlands, but that hasn't changed.  In terms of basketball, I'd say there is a recent elevated "angst" toward the program.

Fair enough. I have only recently started following the local sports scene again and this is the one thing that struck me as different from say 20 years ago. I have a lot of family that went to CovCath and it seemed like back then at least, they pulled from Edgewood, Villa Hills, Covington, Ft Mitchell and Ft Wright. Which made/makes sense.  IMO rivalries and community support are always better when the teams are made up of kids from the area. Just curious if that was how the fan base felt. Thanks. 

I know St.X gets multiple kids from Indiana since there is only one small Catholic school in Southern Indiana which is Providence, so if you live over there and want to go to bigger Catholic school then St.X and Trinity are your options. You also have people that move over to Indiana then want to still send kid to Catholic school in Louisville. To me, kid going from Cincinnati to Covington Catholic is no big deal. I think if your winning who cares where kids come from. As long as school maintains good academics and athletics most people will be happy.

I've always been under the impression that any private school had students who didn't necessarily live "in the neighborhood." If someone has an issue because a particular private school takes students from beyond their immediate area, I have a hard time understanding that logic.

I fully expect any private school to have kids from outside the neighborhood. It just feels like it’s been taken to another level entirely when the starting 5 all live in another state. I have been lead to believe this is becoming the norm in football as well. Maybe I’m just living in the past.

This sounds like Little Johnny's dad being mad he's not good enough to play, but that's just me.

Jesus. I have no children attending CovCath. I do however feel for those kids who it might affect. No skin in the game whatsoever though. I just prefer the way it used to be.

I didn't mean you specifically. I'm talking about folks who may be complaining that CCH has players from other areas.

I don’t think anything has changed.  As for football, we need to get a full season in with fans in attendance to see what that feels like again. For all schools.  Hard to have “community “ via computers.  

This is an interesting topic. I can see why some may feel one way or the other but in the end, you will always be able to draw talent in with talented coaching or maybe it's the talented coaching making the best with the kids they get.
