I’m not sure there is a prototype college coach that just automatically would make a good NFL head coach. I’ll admit I’ve never looked at Urban as an NFL coach, but it’s not an exact science so who knows. Urban’s got a huge coaching tree even at the NFL level already so it will just depend on the staff he puts together.

And in fairness to Saban, it wasn't like he was fired, he simply left after two ho-hum NFL seasons to coach Alabama. I think the lack of control is what ultimately led to him jumping back in to the college game. Saban adapts better than any coach probably ever but it’s not always immediate. People forget that Alabama lost to Louisiana-Monroe his first year in Tuscaloosa. It takes time. Look at the transition from Saban’s early Bama teams that just wouldn’t give up any points but ran a vanilla offense focused on the run. Now this year they may have had the best offense in the history of college football. He adapts and beats you at your own game. Saban hated the RPO when it first got popular. Alabama just torched Ohio State with the RPO. There’s no doubt that with a few more years in the NFL that he would have done that in Miami. Urban isn’t the adapter that Saban is. But that’s not what made Urban successful. Building a culture is what Urban successful. Culture wins in the NFL. Traditionally the teams that are always in contention every year the Patriots, the Steelers, the Ravens, the Packers. They all have a unique and rigid culture that if you don’t fit in, you’re out no matter your talent. Urban can do that so it will be interesting to see if it comes to fruition.

Certainly, his constant demands won’t work on adults who make more than him. Feels Rick Pitino-ish, hope not.
January 15, 20215 yr Belichik isn't exactly Mr. Nice Guy and he's done fine in the NFL. The good thing about this situation for Meyer is he doesn't have to call plays. He can manage the coaches and I think the players will respect him. Most of the guys in the league were playing in college while Urban was coaching and winning at the highest level. I might argue that Urban has adapted as well as Saban. He changed his offense quickly when JT Barrett went down and Jones replaced him. Went back to more RPO with Barrett the next season and then changed his offense again when Barrett graduated and Haskins replaced him. I think he will adapt just fine. He is 100% all in on everything he does. That would be the only thing I see stopping him from being successful. His intensity takes a big toll on his health.
January 15, 20215 yr Urban is a great recruiter and may be able to lure quality free agents to Jacksonville, but they still have to work within the confines of the salary cap. The NFL is built for parity. How good would Urban had been in college if every team he played against had the same 4 and 5 star guys?

He isn’t taking any of them with him. Only person he’s taking is Ryan Stamper who runs the real life Wednesday program.

One of the names that I thought there might be an outside chance of hearing was that of Marvin Lewis as D-coordinator. Thought there would be several positives to a hire like that.
