Yawn .... soooooo boring. I have zero interest in watching these same teams play again in the playoffs. If there is nothing else going on, I might watch but I couldn't care less about what happens. The CFB has shot itself in the foot IMO.

If you don't like the current system, what is your solution? Put some meat on the bones. Give us reasons why you like an 8 or 16 team playoff (or something else) better and tell us how your system will work around the big road block - money.

They have it right listing 6 but need 2 bye’s.

I thought about your thread when I started this one. I would rather go to an expanded playoff system than go back to the old bowl structure. But if I had to choose between the old bowl structure and this team facade, I think I would prefer the old system. Let a committee choose the two best for a title game, and let those other bowl games go back to what they used to be. We can sit down at 11 am and watch college football till midnight.

Side note: Huge thanks to you for your leadership throughout this season. You and the coaches speaking up had a big impact on making this season happen.

8 team playoff. The five conference champions from power 5 get automatic bid. Which we still would see some of the same teams on Bama, OSU, and Clemson usually every year. Then you have three at large teams.

Have certain rules in place, for if a non power 5 team reaches a certain place in a computer system like an old BCS ranking system, then that non power five team automatically gets one of those at large spots. This way it takes away the human element of people not truly considering them due to money.

I think also have provisions in place, that is a power 5 champion is not ranked at a certain spot in a BCS ranking, then it cancels out their automatic bid. This way it saves from a power five conference getting an automatic bid, if they truly didn’t have a good team that year and lots of losses.

So basically an 8 team playoff with some automatic bids for power five champs, but also some provisions in place using a BCS type ranking system instead of a committee to determine at larges.

Right now, there are 4 teams that are going to be in the conversation every single year. Nothing is going to change that as long as the current coaches are at those schools. We now have a 5th school, Notre Dame, that is also likely going to be in the conversation every year as long as Kelly is there. Then you have Georgia who is always right there lurking as well. There’s 6 spots that even if you expand the playoff and your complaint is seeing the same teams year after year, you’re still going to have that. It’s still always going to be Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, and Georgia. No matter how you expand it, the same 6 teams will still be there. I’d love as much as anyone to see a UC try and compete with the big boys. At the end of the day though, there are only 6 teams capable of winning a national championship year in and year out. Last year upset that because you did have a historical team in LSU. But it’s not like the current system is leaving out a deserving team or a team that is capable of winning.

I think WHEN it expands, it goes to 8 teams.

This year's 8 team playoff would have been:

1 Bama v 8 Cincinnati

4 Notre Dame v 5 Texas A&M

2 Clemson v 7 Florida

3 Ohio State v 6 Oklahoma

UC v Bama would probably be ugly but I think you would see a lot more interest nationally with this set up. It also creates a ridiculous amount of additional revenue for each conference represented.

Under the suggested 8 team format that's being floated around amongst AD's, all five P5 champions get an AQ, top ranked G5 conference champ gets an AQ, then 2 at large.

I am not in favor of expansion, but I would be totally against automatic qualifiers unless it goes up to at least 12 teams. Preferably 16.

I always hate the “it works in other divisions of college football” argument. Sure it does. Any number of teams you put in a tournament “will work.” But there are only a handful of teams at the FCS level, for example, that have a shot. 8 of the past 9 years NDSU has won it all. The year they didn’t they lost in a close contest in the semifinals.

Part of what has made big time college football special has been the uniqueness of the bowl system and the tradition that goes with it. The more the playoffs are expanded, the more it is like every other sport and football at every other level.

I'm not much on predictions, but the public reaction to this year's four playoff teams may be an indication of a decline in the interest of college football in the near future.

I’m not sure we can take anything from this year as any indication for the future of the sport. Conferences playing different amounts of games, no out of conference games, very limited fans in the stands. Plus just this entire year has been really hard on every one of us. I think any reaction to this year is probably an overreaction.

Keeping the bowl system is very important to me and I feel like it is to a lot of people. I personally think 8 is better in order to preserve the integrity of the regular season, but I also want bowl games to mean something. So let’s take the NY6 bowl games and add 2 more. So NY8. Keep the traditional matchups so B1G and Pac 12 in Rose, ACC in Orange Bowl, SEC/Big 12 in Sugar. Make the bowl games the first round of the playoffs. It won’t be perfect because it won’t likely be 1v16, 2v15 etc. But after the bowl games you take those winners, use the committee to rank them from 1-8 and then play the playoff. That would be really fun and would keep most people happy.

You may very well be correct, but I disagree.

The strange circumstances of 2020 almost eliminated Ohio State from the Playoffs. When that was about to happen, the Big Ten made adjustments to get them in.

If anything, 2020 was an opportunity for new blood to get into the playoffs, and it still did not happen.

Ohio State was only in jeopardy of missing the playoffs if they lost a game. That didn’t happen. If they almost missed the playoffs why are they at 3 instead of 4? The issue is there wasn’t a new blood that proved they belonged. With the absence of out of conference matchups, there isn’t anything to get a UC type team in the playoffs. A&M got their doors blown off by Bama and most people think Bama is way better now than they even were when they played A&M. I’m just not sure what a viable alternative is for the 4 teams that made it.

6 or 7 teams...

All power 5 champions should be in.

Find a way to let smaller conferences have some sort of play in game vs the second place teams from the big boy conferences.

In a perfect world, Cincy should be playing A&M for a shot to be destroyed by Bama this year.
