Covington Catholic 59 Highlands 54 (9th Region Finals)

Featured Replies

I think you could argue Sam Vinson deserved 9th region MVP. They rarely ever give it to a player on the losing team but when you look up the true definition of valuable Vinson definitely fits that. Take Vinson off of Highlands where are they? Take Green off of CCH where are they? Just a thought. Congrats to Cov Cath!

I disagree with this. I agree that Vinson is very good, and likely the best player on the floor last night. If HHS won, he would have been the MVP. But, they lost. Vinson and team could not get over the hump. And, CCH did win, and Neil was the most valuable productive player on their team over the course of the tournament.

You can't fault Neil for the talent that is around him, and where they would be if he wasn't there, just like you can't build Vinson up, just because his team isn't as deep or talented as CCH.

CCH won so their most valuable player gets the award. That simple.

With your logic, I could argue that DaeShawn White or Gavin Rabe or Ian Snelling should have won. Where would their teams be without them???

Didnt play much in the semi-final either. Wonder what's up there?

Albeit, I saw a bunch of people on here mention him in the beginning of the year as a D1 talent, and the next big thing at CCH, but haven't heard much about him lately. Hope the young man is okay.

Seems he's on a short leash and lacking confidence. You can see his head drop every time he makes a mistake and then he looks to the bench and see's he is being subbed out. I guess now is not the time to play through continued mistakes, but the young man needs to keep his head up as the talent is there. His take to the rim in the 4th quarter was nice, but then he made a bad pass to a 7' against a trapping defense 35' from the basket that resulted in a TO. Head dropped and he came out of the game.

If I remember correctly Green had 7 points at the half. Vinson was excellent, pure talent and guts. But Green was just as tough and the Colonel’s won after he seized the last rebound and made it to free throw line.

(It was cool to see Neil share his moment by personally congratulating every other member of the all-tournament team.)

The rest of the 9th region will be glad to see Disken and Green graduate and move on. How's that for a backhanded compliment?

You take Green off CCH and they are sitting at home, with Holy Cross in the 9th region. Lol. All kidding aside, with highly touted talent all around him, he consistently puts up double doubles and outworks others under the basket to get his team the W. Definitely not the most talented kid, and I have no dog in fight. But the most deserving player in this region IMO, and his performance backs it up.

Sam Vinson had the biggest impact and the best stats in this tournament and was one possession away from winning it. Neil had zero points at halftime. They should change the name of the award to "most valuable player on the winning team". In 1969 Jerry West won finals MVP on the losing side, and in 2015 LeBron was a few votes shy of winning despite losing. Obviously a different league but there has been evidence of this occurring.

Green had 7 points at the half.

Vinson had 8 points at the half.

Vinson making 12 of 12 from the line, in that building, with that much on the line, is really impressive. The rest of his stat-line is rather pedestrian, but the kid is a big-time player, a really nice young man, and has a bright future ahead of him. Hope he stays healthy, stays on the grind, and maximizes his ability.

Green should’ve got the award and did. Still does not change my opinion that Vinson is hands down the number 1 player in the ninth!!

I had 4 bites of a hamburger at the half.

Did you come out stronger in the 2nd half? 8 more bites for total of 12? Did you end with a double double, 12 bites from a burger and 11 slurps from a Mountain Dew?

Agree. There is always someone trying to find a way to hand a trophy to the person on the losing end. Vinson got what he earned, "All-Tournament Team". The winning team's most valuable player should get the trophy, and did.

NTM, the first time they played when CCH won by 26 and Green had 17 (on 6/7 shooting, and 5/6 FT), and was strong inside, and Vinson had 7 and and was 3/12 from the field.

Vinson is a stud. I hope that he goes to NKU (but, he may end up higher level) and has a long, successful career, and I can cheer for him for the next 4-5 years. But, last night, Green earned it.

Should have ordered the Chicken Fingers! :)
