Saint Xavier changes from local equipment provider

Agree.

Shively has become complacent.

Hell the school next door to them use BSN.

What does that tell you?

It is about dollars and cents in this day and age. I’m sure BSN is making inroads everywhere.

A couple of things...

1. Anyone who knows anything about St. X knows that no money decisions "just get made" without the higher-up's knowing.

2. St. X has a responsibility to do what is best for the students at St. X. If that means using another dealer that provides their student-athletes with better opportunities in terms of apparel and equipment, then that is what they're supposed to do.

3. In this day and age, any school that is not forcing the vendors to compete for their business by routinely bidding out their needs is doing a financial disservice to the school.

Great points all.

About dollars and cents.

BSN = Dollars

Shively = Cents

You forgot: BSN=accessibility to better product

Does this change have anything to do with St. X’s updated online campus store website?

BSN offers that service. So I would assume so. They do their own in house printing. So they can make shirts as they’re ordered.

Is the new supplier the same one that Trinity uses?

The "Momma Rocks" sew and hand make all of T's uniforms

Saving money doesn’t always beat good service you get.

What if you could save money AND get good service? That's possible with these large companies. BSN, for example, has purchased a lot of local companies like Lowe's Sporting Goods and kept them in business by utilizing them as a local avenue.

Also, maybe sadly, but these big companies pay to get the firs dibs on things. The local company is put on the back burner by Nike, Adidas, whoever and by using the big company you get the sizes, selections, colors, etc. that you want because you were expedited.

I love local companies, but districts are being asked to pinch pennies wherever they can and parents are asked to fundraise more and more. It is just hard to justify when the big company will deliver it to your door in a couple days and they have automated billing, your own account on the website, etc.

The BSN rep near us offered our school to be a BSN school and sign a contract with them to buy everything through them. We would receive a rebate at the end of the year. We thought about it but then we checked with pricing. Their pricing is good but not as good as a another place. So basically we were going to pay 5% more throughout the year to receive 5% back at the end of the year.

BSN comes in and woos the administration with the one-stop ordering thing and they fall in love with it. I can see why too. If you told a principal you could get EVERYTHING you need for the school from BSN you jump at that chance. Garbage cans, cleaning supplies, PE equipment, benches, trash bags, footballs, baseballs.

Then you get a check back at the end of the school year, which the district people love.

But in reality it doesn't save you money.

My local school district has to bid out all major purchases and even requires their coaches to get at least 2 bids on ANY purchase. I know that BSN has been the lowest bid the great majority of the time. They can offer lower prices because they are a nation wide company.

But in reality it doesn't save you money.

Maybe not for your local school situation. Where I am there have been a wave of counties switching. They aren't doing that if there isn't some advantage. It is usually money.

Amazon might not save me money either, but it sure is a lot easier to know that I can get my dog food delivered to my door on the same day every month and I don't have to lug that 50 lb bag to my car for the same price as Amazon. So, all things being equal, give me the easier method every time.
