Kentucky's Sweet 16 to wrap up before March Madness begins?

Featured Replies

I would concede to this format only IF they would drop the first round of football playoffs and have the Football Championships on Thanksgiving weekend as in the past.

They could just shorten basketball season on the back end, no need to cut anymore into football. Just play fewer games.

Most gyms are half packed anyways on any given nights. Drop a week of the basketball season. No need to overlap seasons when all that will do is encourage kids to play one sport or the other. I know sometimes it takes teams a little while to hit their stride because they’re waiting for their football kids to be back in shape and back in the routine.

Terrible idea. It's not going to change attendance, as noted by a couple of you. NCAA tourny and Sweet 16 shared dates forever with no issue, now there is one? Cmon, man.

For the kids that play, still playing in March is awesome. It's basketball's month and the whole state is all basketball.

For the All 'A' schools this will make most of the season feel longer than the NBA playoffs. The good 'A' teams will just come off a regional tournament and possibly a state run, and then almost start right back over with districts.

For fans, I think most feel much more like driving an hour or so to go watch a few games in March than in Feb. Parking and walking to Rupp, much more pleasant (most of the time) in March than Feb. Nothing better than wearing shorts and walking in to Rupp to watch some HS basketball after listening to Marty call a Spring Training game on the trip down.

If we're a basketball state and we stay one class because of tradition, then keep the traditions....

I'm sure I'm in the minority but I wish they would go back to the championship game being played on Saturday night. I don't like that they added a whole other day to the format. I know- they will never go back to that schedule but if you like to go to boys and girls that ties up 2 weeks from Wednesday to Sunday. That's alot of vacation for the most people.

Another thought- sounds like maybe someone from the KHSAA wants to go to some NCAA tournament games - just saying!!

When I go to the tournament I enjoy being able to watch some NCAA games when not watching the Sweet Sixteen tournament.

I agree with this all around. Thursday and Friday, when Sweet 16 and NCAA tournament are going on at same time, are my favorite 2 days of the year. In today's time, it's very easy to be sitting inside Rupp watching State tourney and have NCAA tournament on the phone.

Would the change move the Sweet 16 up to SEC tournament week? I think that would hurt attendance as much if not worse than the NCAA tournament.

I also wish they would bring the Championship game back to Saturday night although I don't think that will ever happen again. I'm pretty sure the kids play 3-4 games on same day during AAU season.

Yep, bring the championship game back to Saturday night.

Agreed. This would also allow those who play spring sports to get an earlier start. Drop the regular season to 30 or 32 games (for what it’s worth, baseball should do the same thing), end the season two weeks earlier and call it a day.

The regular season is 30 games.

Oops..thinking about spring. Still, drop a few, down to 28 or 26, which buys you an extra week or two.

Agreed, this kids play too many games.

They play 28 to 30 games in a month in AAU. So how is that to many?

I won't even get started on the AAU stuff.
