8th Region Week 9 Review: With a Footnote*

8th Region Week 9 Review: With a Footnote*

By Colonelmike

It’s getting to be “that” time of the year.

No, I’m not talking about tournament time – hold your horses, we still have three weeks to go before that.

No, I’m talking about the time during the final third of the season when everyone seems to have one or two players nursing injuries, and spending time on the sidelines. It makes it hard to assess the real import of game results. How much, after all, is a victory truly worth when the losing team is missing key players? Is it real or a mirage? What can we really learn from the results?

Several key players are out. Woodford County’s talented center, Hunter Penn. Henry County’s impressive big man, Trevor Hardin. Hayden Dickerson, arguably the best defender on Gallatin County’s team. Teagan Moore, the outstanding freshman at Owen County. And that’s hardly an all-inclusive list.

Note that I only mention players who are anticipated back in their team’s lineup. Players out for the year, well, are out for the year. That’s the new “normal” for that team.

So maybe everything we talk about this week comes with an asterisk.

That said, the region struggled a bit this week in out of region games, going just 16-25. The top 6 teams in this week’s rankings went a healthy 8-4 against teams outside region 8, but the rest of the region went just 8-21. It was an aggressive week of scheduling; Region 8 teams took losses to some credible opposition: Male, Waggener, St. Henry, Somerset, Trinity, and Covington Catholic, among others.

Oldham County was this week’s standard-bearer for the Region – the Colonels beat two solid teams outside the region, going on the road to defeat Sixth Region power Pleasure Ridge Park (#36 RPI) and later defeating Tates Creek (#38 RPI) at home.

Collins almost bagged a major win, falling just short in a matchup with #4 ranked Male, 81-77.

Within the region, North Oldham’s six point upset victory over #15 ranked South Oldham was a big win for the Mustangs, who served notice that they have re-tooled their offense and will be a contender after losing star point guard Justin Powell for the season.

Despite the so-so week, overall, for the region, Region 8 continues to get its share of “love”. I’m not enamored with the new “RPI” rating, but it is still useful as a general baromete, of where teams stand. In looking at the RPI “Top 50” teams, only Region 7 has more teams ranked in the RPI Top 50 (7). Region 8 and Region 9 come next, each with five teams ranked in the RPI Top 50.

On to this week’s rankings:

I just didn’t see much cause to re-arrange the top four…

1 – Oldham County (21-2) Last week: #1 Bluegrasspreps.com state ranking: #13 RPI: #7 .67555 Oldham County had a very productive week last week, winning three straight games to push their overall record to 21-2 and extending their region-best winning streak to twelve games.

Coy Zerhusen has rightfully been pleased with his team.

“Our guys are playing hard and playing together which are the top reasons we are playing well,” he stated over the weekend.

Referring to the general lack of varsity experience his team had coming into the season:

“The varsity game is starting to slow down for most of them and we are starting to embrace our roles,” he added. “We still haven’t played a full four quarters yet.”

The Colonels, who are undefeated in 2020, played well enough last week to win all three of their ballgames, including two solid victories against two teams ranked in the RPI Top 40. Oldham began the week with a 79-73 road victory over Pleasure Ridge Park, a sixth region power ranked #36 by the RPI.

After an 89-47 victory over Shelby County, the Colonels wrapped up the week with a 53-45 home win over Tates Creek, ranked #38 by the RPI.

Oldham County is averaging 71.7 ppg, second-most in the region. The Colonels are also giving up just 56.4 ppg; second-fewest allowed in the region.

Oldham has a challenging week ahead, with big games against in-region and out-of-region foes.

This week:

2/4/2020 vs. LaRue County (#59 RPI) 2/6/2020 vs. Simon Kenton (#50 RPI) (The Pegasus Sports Network - PSN) 2/8/2020 at Scott High.

2 – Collins (18-5) Last week: #2 bluegrasspreps.com state ranking: #9 RPI: #9 .66710 If strength of schedule is all that matters, Collins may have the upper hand. The Titans have played a brutal schedule all season, and last week was no exception as Collins played #4-ranked Male.

It was the Titans’ second meeting with Male this year, and this time, Collins made the Bulldogs sweat, falling by just four points, 81-77. Collins shot 52.9% against the powerful Bulldogs, marking their sixth consecutive contest in which they shot over 50% from the floor.

I asked Head Coach Chris Gaither if the back-to-back losses to Simon Kenton and Male could be positives for his team.

“The losses to Male and SK came at a good time for us,” he stated. “Obviously, you are never happy about losing but it can be positive if your team learns from it.”

“We are good defensively but far from great. These losses exposed our lack of consistency on the defensive end in many areas (boxing out/communication/help side rotations),” he continued. “We have worked a lot the last week just on simple defensive fundamentals to clean these up and I believe our team is responding to the challenges and have a desire to be great.”

Eighth Region Player of the Year favorite Dayvion McKnight scored a season-high 35 points for Collins, his third game of 30 points or more this season, but his first since scoring 30 against Shelby County on 12/13/2019.

Collins has won 9 of its last 11 games.

This week: 2/5/2020 at DeSales (RPI #54) 2/8/2020 McCracken County (BGP #7) at Warren Central in the Wes Strader Shootout

3 – South Oldham (16-7) Last week: #3 Bluegrasspreps.com state ranking: #15 RPI: #27 .62277 The North beat the South.

After a big week the week before, when South blitzed three consecutive opponents, the Dragons had just one game last week. It was a big game, however, as the South Oldham Dragons faced their arch-rivals from Goshen, the North Oldham Mustangs.

The game didn’t mean anything from a district seeding perspective; Oldham County had already cemented the #1 seed; North and South knew already that they were destined to play in the first round of the District 29 tourney. The game, however, had tremendous importance in terms of back-yard bragging rights.

In the end, the game was a barn-burner that wasn’t settled until the final minute, with the Mustangs claiming a 71-65 victory.

South struggled where they rarely struggle – beyond the arc – hitting just 4 of 15 three pointers. And in a close ballgame where every point mattered, the Dragons were also let down by their free throw shooting, hitting just 17 of 26 free throws (65.4%), well below their team average of around 73%, which would have gained them a few more points – and some more looks, potentially.

Since January 1, South has been held below 70 points only three times – but the Dragons are 0-3 in those contests.

South continues to lead the region in scoring – and the number is going up. As of the end of this week, the Dragons are averaging 77.4 ppg.

This week should provide an opportunity for South to generate some momentum as they will be heavy favorites in all three of their games:

2/3/2020 at Carroll County 2/4/2020 at Shelby County 2/8/2020 at Lafayette

4 – Simon Kenton (14-8) Last week: #4 RPI: #50 .58950 SK only had one game last week, and it didn’t work out too well for the Pioneers, as they fell, 66-43, to #2-ranked Covington Catholic.

I didn’t see this as cause to move SK down any this week; after all, the powerful Colonels beat Conner (15-5) by 23 points, one of the top 15th-region teams, Johnson Central, by 28, and #19-ranked Highlands by 26. Frankly, it seemed as if the Pioneers were in pretty good company.

SK simply didn’t shoot the ball well against CovCath, hitting just 43.2% of their shots. They were a solid 5 of 12 beyond the arc, but only made it to the line 6 times (though they did make all six).

Free throw woes didn’t make much of a difference in this game, but that’s a stat SK would like to improve upon. It’s not a question of making the shots, it’s a matter of getting the shots. The Pioneers are taking less than 12 free throw attempts a game as a team.

Logan Schwartz had 13 points to lead SK; Kelly Niece had 10. Jon Hensley had 8 rebounds to lead Simon Kenton on the glass.

Though he had just 10 against Covington Catholic, Niece has been hot of late, averaging 22.8 ppg over the last four contests. He’s now the Pioneers’ leading scorer at 16.9 ppg.

Just over a week ago, the Pioneers had an opportunity for a statement win within the region, and they took advantage, knocking off Collins. They’ll get another chance this week:

This week:

2/4/2020 at Gallatin County 2/6/2020 at #13 Oldham County (The Pegasus Sports Network - PSN) 2/8/2020 Scott County (at Lafayette in the Jock Sutherland Classic)

In the Hunt… All of the teams in this second tier have question marks that must be answered – but if those questions are resolved, these teams can make big runs, perhaps all the way to Rupp Arena.

5 – North Oldham (12-10) Last week: #5 RPI: #85 .55082 – Last week I said that the Mustangs are “back on the upswing”. This week, I’m going to shorten that statement: “The Mustangs are back.”

Not that David Levitch’s squad went anywhere, exactly, but North was certainly wandering around in the wilderness for a while after losing Justin Powell to a season-ending injury.

Coach Levitch tried slowing things down – and that didn’t exactly work. Now he’s trying to speed things up – and this alternative seems to be paying bigger dividends. The Mustangs are still having hiccups – witness the 12 point loss to a solid Waggener team last week – but they seem to have found their stride.

Last week, North manufactured the biggest upset victory within the region, toppling the third-ranked team in region 8, South Oldham, by six.

North started the week with a loss, falling to Waggener, 72-60. Austin “Rico” Carr-Cole led the Mustangs off the bench, scoring 21 points.

The sophomore had an even bigger encore performance up his sleeve against South, as Carr-Cole erupted for 25 points against the Dragons, including 6 of 9 from beyond the arc. The 25 points marked his season high – four more than the 21 he scored just days before against Waggener.

Carr-Cole has been quite the story of late; in the last seven games, the reserve guard – previously primarily known for his defensive abilities – has scored in double digits six times, and he has led the team in scoring four times. During that stretch, he has averaged 15.3 ppg, and he has raised his season average to 9.9 ppg.

Along with the emergence of Carr-Cole has come the re-emergence of the Mustang offense. In the last six games, North has averaged 74.8 ppg…

North will continue with their aggressive schedule this week. The Mustangs have already played Male, when the Bulldogs were number one – and then played Male in a rematch. North lost to Ballard in the finals of the King of the Bluegrass – and now gets the Bruins again, in a rematch. Ballard is the current #1 in the Bluegrasspreps.com rankings.

This week:

2/5/2020 at #1-ranked Ballard 2/7/2020 vs. Grant County 2/8/2020 vs. Central

6 – Spencer County (14-7 Last week: #6 RPI: #40 .60281 Spencer opened last week with a 17-point win over Walton-Verona, showing a solid defense – holding Walton 15 points below their average – and putting on one of their best offensive displays of the season, scoring 69 points while hitting 56% from the floor, only the second time the Bears have hit over 50% from the floor this season.

Sam Conley had 23 and Gage Mabry 21 to lead the way.

Spencer then defeated Trimble, 75-53. Although Spencer hit 46.9% overall, the Bears hit 19 of 33 from inside the arc for over 57%. Spencer did it again in their final game of the week, hitting 18 of 32 inside the arc in a win over a short-handed Gallatin County squad, 75-49.

Sam Conley led Spencer in scoring in all three games last week; he’s led the team in scoring in fourteen consecutive games now and has scored 20 points or more in seven straight.

The Bears continue to be a team held together by a “gang of four” – Conley, Mabry, Lucas Hornback, and Jake Whitlock combine for 57.5 ppg – that represents 87.3% of Spencer’s scoring. The other members of the team only average a combined 8.4 points per contest.

Spencer will be favored in both of their games this week, but both could be challenges.

North Bullitt will try to speed the game up to “lightspeed”; Anderson County will try to make it slow and physical.

This week:

2/4/2020 at North Bullitt (RPI #51) 2/7/2020 Anderson County

7 – Grant County (13-7) Last week: #9 RPI: #84 .55175 The Braves zoom up in the rankings this week, up two.

Grant won two games last week, beating Owen County, 85-54, and defeating Carroll County, 76-44.

Heavily favored in both games, the Braves were impressive in dominating two teams that they were expected to beat handily.

Senior center Luke Dawalt led the way in both games, scoring 23 points against Owen and 25 against Carroll.

Grant County now owns the region’s second-longest winning streak at 4 and has shot over 50% in all four games.

With a strong collection of shooters, a decent inside game, and dramatic improvement from their freshman class, the Braves look to be hitting their stride at just the right time. This week, they’ll get to prove that they belong with an ever-increasing level of difficulty.

This week:

2/3/2020 at Ryle 2/4/2020 vs. Henry County 2/7/2020 at North Oldham

8 – Woodford County (13-11) Last week: #7 RPI: #64 .57161 Woodford County had won 11 of 13 games and was King of the World in the 8th Region, the hottest team in the region. But that was when disaster struck; star center Hunter Penn went down with an injury against Walton-Verona in a come-from-behind 74-71 win.

Since then, the Yellowjackets haven’t quite been the same. Woodford has gone 1-4 since the Penn injury, has scored a mere 51.6 ppg, and has made less than a third of their shots.

Ouch.

Last week started promisingly; the Yellowjackets opened with a 58-54 victory over East Jessamine, before falling to district foe Collins, 66-48, and 68-40 to Trinity.

If / when Penn comes back, this team is a contender. The Jackets are the only Kentucky team to beat Oldham County so far. However, at this time, there is no word yet on when Penn may return.

This week: 2/4/2020 at Great Crossing 2/7/2020 vs. Shelby County

9 – Gallatin County (11-11) Last week: #8 RPI: #133 .50740 The absence of Hayden Dickerson was keenly felt last week, as the Wildcats were without arguably their top defender.

That said, Dickerson’s 8.4 ppg was also keenly missed, as Gallatin managed just 53 ppg during their three games last week, losing all three.

Henry County topped the Cats, 68-56, to start last week. Jarin Rassman led the Wildcats with 23 points and Gage Ashcraft had 16, but nobody else scored more than four points in the loss. Gallatin shot just 39.7%.

It was a similar tale against Spencer County; the Bears held Gallatin to just 38.3% shooting, and again only Rassman (21 points) and Ashcraft (11) made it to double digits. Again, nobody else had more than 4.

Lloyd Memorial made it an 0-3 week for Gallatin by beating the Wildcats, 63-54 to close out the week.

Gallatin actually is dealing with the loss of two players. Dickerson will return; Noah St. Clair likely will not. St. Clair left the team after the loss to Oldham County seven games ago. St. Clair was no stats monster, but he gave Gallatin 7.7 ppg off the bench and nearly 4 rebounds.

This week:

2/4/2020 vs Simon Kenton 2/6/2020 at Eminence 2/8/2020 vs. Owen County

The Third Tier – At least one of the below should make it to the Region 8 Tournament:

10 – Anderson County (14-7) Last week: #10 RPI: #90 .54940 The losing stretch has stretched to five in Lawrenceburg, as Anderson County lost their only game last week, falling to Somerset – the 12th Region’s All-A champions – 52-46.

Anderson, who’s averaged just 38.8 ppg during the losing streak, is now averaging just 50.2 ppg on the season, 17th-best in the region.

Anderson County appears destined for the #4 seed in the five-team 30th District tournament, which should mean a first-round matchup with Shelby County. The Bearcats should win that game, which would place them in a second-round game with Collins. The Bearcats played Collins to a tight finish the first time the two met, in a game that was literally decided in the final ten seconds.

The Bearcats have some opportunities to earn a big win in their final six games, as they try to regain their mojo. Games with Spencer County, Oldham County, and Lexington Christian loom ahead as potential momentum-builders.

This week:

2/7/2020 at Spencer County

11 – Walton-Verona (9-12) Last week: #11 RPI: #170 .46784 Walton stays at #11 this week after a tough week in which they went 0-2 against some good opposition.

The Bearcats dropped a 69-52 decision to Spencer County last week before falling to the Kentucky All-A Classic Champs, St. Henry, 74-59.

Brant Smithers led the Cats in both games, scoring 17 against Spencer and 24 against St. Henry.

Walton continues to be one of the more prolific offenses in the region, scoring at a 67.0 ppg clip, but the Bearcats are struggling at the defensive end, giving up 66.8 points per contest, third-worst in the region. If Walton can shore that up over the next couple of weeks, the Bearcats will have an outside shot at making it to New Castle. Without a doubt, Walton-Verona – when they are on – can shoot with the best of the teams in the 8th Region.

Walton has a friendly schedule this week and a real chance to be back at .500 by next weekend.

This week:

2/4/2020 at Williamstown 2/6/2020 at Villa Madonna 2/7/2020 vs. Trimble County

12 – Henry County (11-10) Last week: #13 RPI: 175 .46492 I like what I see happening in New Castle, and I’m hardly surprised. Enoch Welch continues to show that he’s one of the best “builders” in the 8th Region, and it appears Henry County is poised to make a strong run for what would be their third consecutive trip to the 8th Region tournament. The Wildcats move up one in this week’s rankings.

Henry County won three straight last week to push their record back above .500. The Cats began the week by stunning 31st district favorite Gallatin County, 68-56. Ethan Lankford scored 28 points to lead the Cats, but the most impressive statistic was in the rebounding column, where the Wildcats from New Castle outrebounded the Wildcats from Warsaw, 38-19.

Henry then grabbed another 31st district win, topping Carroll County, 56-50. With all-region center Trevor Hardin out with an ankle injury, the Wildcats placed five players in double figures, led by Will Peyton with 18 points and Kevin Wix with 16. Ethan Lankford (14 points), Ryan Phillips (11), and Josiah Montero (10) also scored in double digits. Despite Hardin’s absence, the Wildcats battled Carroll to a 37-37 standstill on the glass.

The Cats wrapped up the week with a 78-76 triple overtime thriller of a win over a battling Williamstown squad.

Welch was pleased with the effort, especially since the district pairings were pretty much already set.

“We played well on Tuesday and Thursday but with seeding already pretty much set, none of us coaches were showing our cards for districts,” he said in response to a weekend query. “Trevor (Hardin) went down with an ankle injury against Carroll. It may be a week or two but I think he will be back, just being cautious.

“Friday, Ethan (Lankford) had to get three staples in his head at the beginning of the fourth period after an inadvertent elbow, he should be ready in a few days. I was really proud of our teams effort without he and Trevor to pull it out.”

When asked about the possibility of a return trip to the region tournament, Welch took a pass:

“As far as the region goes, we aren’t looking any further than the next game on our schedule and just trying to continue to improve. We definitely need to get healthy because there are some really good teams left on our schedule.”

Over the last nine games, Henry has gone 7-2, while averaging 74.3 ppg – over 10 points more per game than they have been averaging this season.

Henry has a chance to build on their momentum this week against a relatively friendly schedule; they also will face a team in Grant County that will give them a chance to see how far they have come.

This week:

2/3/2020 vs Bluegrass United (homeschool) 2/4/2020 at Grant County 2/7/2020 at Eminence 2/8/2020 vs Washington County

13 – Carroll County (9-12) Last week: #12 RPI: #195 .43637 The Panthers had a difficult week, dropping two games. Carroll fell to Grant County, 76-44, before losing a close district game to Henry County, 56-50.

Keishaun Mumphrey led the Panthers in both games, scoring 15 points and grabbing 7 boards against Grant before recording yet another double-double against Henry County, scoring 16 points and grabbing 15 rebounds.

Wyatt Supplee played in both games, but the Panthers’ leading scorer appears to not be back to his pre-injury form; he had 9 points against Grant and 14 against Henry.

Carroll’s shooting eye took a vacation last week; the Panthers hit just 7 of 26 beyond the arc in the two games, combined. They also hit only 13 of 27 (48.1%) combined, at the line.

A tough schedule remains for Carroll County to wrap up the season; the Panthers will be underdogs in five of their remaining seven contests.

This week:

2/3/2020 vs. #15 South Oldham 2/4/2020 at Trinity 2/6/2020 at Williamstown 2/7/2020 at Whitefield Academy

The Longshots…

14 – Owen County (5-16) Last week: #15 RPI: #245 .36555 Owen went 1-2 last week, with a 41-37 victory over Eminence the lone victory. The Rebels lost by 6 to Ludlow and then fell, 70-55, to Sayre.

The win over Eminence was costly as star freshman guard – and leading scorer – Teagan Moore went down hard on a dunk and went out with a concussion. Moore is expected to be out for another couple of weeks but could be back before the post-season.

In his absence, Devin Duvall got some nice contributions from other players.

Sophomore Isaac Wash had 16 points and 8 rebounds against Eminence, then exploded for a double-double – 27 points / 10 rebounds – against Ludlow. Eighth grader Brax Ward had 9 boards against Eminence, seven boards against Ludlow, and had 11 points / 9 rebounds against Sayre. Brandon Lewis had 17 points against Ludlow and 11 against Sayre.

Sometimes, you see players blossom when the star is temporarily out of the picture. Given the choice of “stepping up” or simply folding up, these players start to stretch themselves. It looks like Devin Duvall has put together a team of players who are choosing to “step up”.

Owen may be unlikely to make the region tournament this year, but this young team looks to be a team on the rise.

This week:

2/4/2020 at Franklin County 2/6/2020 vs. Louisville Holy Cross 2/8/2020 at Gallatin County

15 - Williamstown (8-12) Last Week: #14 RPI: #170 .46784 Williamstown has lost 6 of its last 8 games.

Last week, the Demons went 1-3, but surprisingly, Williamstown wasn’t as competitive as perhaps expected.

Williamstown opened the week by dropping a 78-57 decision to the Bracken County Polar Bears. The Demons rebounded to defeat Eminence by 8, and lost to Henry County by just 2 in triple overtime.

But the week ended on a down note as Ludlow hammered the Demons, 68-31.

The Williamstown offense has been stalled a bit in the last eight games, as Williamstown has averaged just 47.5 ppg during that stretch, but the Demons will be competitive through most of their final games, giving them every chance to eclipse last year’s win total of nine.

This week:

2/4/2020 vs. Walton-Verona 2/6/2020 vs. Carroll County 2/8/2020 vs. Covington Latin

16 – Shelby County (4-17) Last Week: #16 RPI: #230 .38761 Shelby County is riding the region’s longest losing streak, dropping two games last week to extend the streak to seven games and 10 in the last 11 games.

West Jessamine topped Shelby, 70-57, last week and then Oldham County blasted the Rockets on Friday, 89-47.

Austin Griffin had 17 against West Jessamine; Trenton Burchfield led the team with 15 against Oldham.

This week:

2/4/2020 vs. South Oldham 2/7/2020 at Woodford County

17 – Trimble County (4-17) Last week: #17 RPI: #232 .38386 Trimble County dropped two last week, falling 75-53 to Spencer County and 78-57 to Newport.

Dylan Jennings had 13 against Spencer and 18 against Newport.

A challenge for Trimble has been outside shooting; the Raiders have made just ten threes over the last four games.

The Raiders are averaging just 55.7 ppg (T#14 in Region 8) and giving up 76.3 ppg (worst in the region).

The good news: Trimble looks to be competitive in 3-4 of their final seven games, giving the Raiders the opportunity to head into the district 29 tournament with some momentum. That tournament will be held in Bedford, on the Raiders’ home court.

This week:

2/3/2020 vs. Eminence 2/7/2020 at Walton-Verona

18 – Eminence (4-19) Last week: #18 RPI: #255 .32024 The Warriors dropped two last week, falling in a heartbreaker to Owen County, 41-37, and losing by just 8 to Williamstown, 43-35.

No stats are available, but it is notable that the Warriors’ held Owen County to 17 points below their team average and Williamstown to 20 points below their scoring average.

This week:

2/3/2020 at Trimble County 2/6/2020 vs. Gallatin County 2/7/2020 vs. Henry County

2/4/2020 Gallatin County vs. Simon Kenton

You are correct. Missed that one.

Sorry I was so late in posting this week....I managed to finish the ranking yesterday, but it was late because I wasn't feeling well yesterday. Stomach bug that everyone seems to have gotten around here.... Again, my apologies for my tardiness.

No problem great job as always.

Nice ranking. I like the way you rank the teams, by the way they are playing currently and not how they were playing in December.

District top seeds:

29th - Oldham County

Not a good night for some of the 8th's better teams....DeSales over Collins by double digits...Ballard absolutely overwhelmed North Oldham (by 36)....ouch.

Big game tonight for Anderson County and Spencer County. The loser will most likely be playing Collins in the district semifinal. Neither team wants to do that. Should be a spirited contest.

Your Bears should handle this one rather easily. Did they have school today? Will they be allowed to play?

District top seeds:

29th - Oldham County

30th - Collins

31st - Gallatin County

32nd - Grant County

Doesn't Grant still have to beat WV to secure the #1 seed?

Fairly certain Gallatin has to defeat Owen to secure the 31st top seed as well.

Both schools out but I'm pretty sure the game is on.
