Collins father coached at Highlands?

 

The Collins kid is a special player. I’m not sure size wise what level he can play on but he jumps off the film. He has produced the past two years. I have no idea who will win but if you watch the game you’re going to see a special player.

 

John Collins was assistant coach with Tom Duffy at Highlands during 1989 and 1992 State Championship seasons. Valz was a senior in '89 and Barth was a sophomore in '92. Coach Barth played for Duffy/Collins his sophomore and junior season, then had Dale Mueller (1st year at HHS) for his senior season at Highlands. Coach Collins and his wife are very good people. Glad to see him and his son having continued success.

I remember when Breathitt County won their 3 state titles back in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s when people said the same things they’re saying this year, “They have a cupcake schedule, played nobody”, etc., as they would progress through the playoff games one win at a time it was the same thing, “Yeah they won that last game but they ain’t seen nobody like they’re playing next game.”

But the Bobcats just went about their business under Coach Mike Halcomb and won each game and ended up with championship rings....three times!

The new coach is a player from Halcomb’s days at Breathitt, Coach Moore, and Halcomb is still around the scene too. Saw him right in the sides lines during a game this season.

So be careful when making Breathitt County predictions. These “ain’t played nobody” predictions didn’t work out back then and may not work now either.

A lot of hoses went on the field in the 90's for the visiting teams before they got there was the word from Jackson.. But Holcomb was an amazing coach for sure. An it is tough to win in Jackson.

This will be a good tune up game for Breathitt before making the trip to Somerset. They need to put WV away early though. Let them play the whole game anything could happen.

I don’t know about hoses but I don’t think that’s the reason they won three state titles. They couldn’t hose the carpet in Louisville.

To be fair, we are comparing apples and tomatoes.

 

Those Breathitt teams were not exactly playing a murderer's row, but there were several respectable programs including some solid 4A teams or District Competition like Prestonsburg. They also had at least one solid playoff game by this time as well. Were they playing great teams? Probably not... but this year's team is literally playing one of the weakest schedules in all of Kentucky.

 

Of the 48 teams remaining playing football, Breathitt County has the 3rd weakest schedule to date of them all. This includes 1A teams. Only Crittenden County and Nicholas County have played weaker schedules, and Crittenden County is comparable.

 

For perspective:

- They are tied for the 4th worst SOS of all 2A teams according to Calpreps.

 

- Breathitt's SOS is the 8th worst in Kentucky for all teams combined. There are 223 teams. Meaning this puts Breathitt in the bottom 3.6% of the State.

 

 

With all that said, it doesn't mean a hill of beans or tell us what is under the hood of this Breathitt team. Through 12 games they have only had one game that did not have a running clock at some point. In other words they beat bad teams exactly how you hoped they would.

 

I count myself as one of many who is eager to see how this plays out, but between you and me I still don't expect this to be a tight game. If this were 2018 Walton-Verona I would feel different, but Breathitt should win this one comfortably.

Breathitt has to play who they play. According to what I have seen on film, they are a very good football team. They also have one of the best running backs in the state. Walton is a young team, but are healthier now than they were in August. Walton will need to execute their plan and keep turnovers and penalties a non factor.
