Covington Catholic 49 Beechwood 3

Featured Replies

For those who are saying why keep playing this game, here are some points to consider on why they keep playing.

First, anyone who walked up and down Beechwood Road before this game could see very clearly why this game will keep being played. There were pre-game parties happening at many homes with both blue and red themes. This game is huge in the community, even when both sides have a good idea on what is going to happen. Beechwood Road was like a major festival there were so many people at so many parties. This is beyond football. This is a big community event.

Two, despite the final score, Beechwood held their own for most of the first half. I saw Covington Catholic versus Ryle. Beechwood was clearly better against Covington Catholic in the first half than Ryle was. Should Ryle stop playing Covington Catholic?

Three, the only reason you would say Beechwood should not play Covington Catholic is if you think Beechwood will never beat Covington Catholic again? Does anyone believe that? Didn't Beechwood beat Covington Catholic in 2014 by 2 touchdowns? Beechwood won by 2 touchdowns in 2008. So every 5 years Beechwood wins one.

Four, every Beechwood fan in the stadium tonight had this thought. I would love to have last year's Beechwood team playing this year's Covington Catholic team. Most Beechwood fans will say that would be a win for Beechwood. Unfortunately, the years and rosters did not align that way.

Five, Covington Catholic once went 10 years without beating Beechwood. Should Covington Catholic have dropped the series? A five year winning streak by Covington Catholic is not a valid reason to drop this series.

Things to consider. I would like to hear one good reason why they should stop playing each other.

Just for fun, CalPreps currently projects the 2019 CovCath team would beat the 2018 Beechwood team 38 - 20.

I would say Eddie is certainly a much more seasoned coach than his days at NCC. Additionally, collectively their Sophomore class is their best class in the school. They may be better next year than this year.

Cov Cath is very senior dominated. Are any sophomores getting varsity playing time? What underclassmen are the future stars? Cov Cath is always going to have good solid depth. I am looking for the next star players that make the difference between a very good team and a great team. The last three years success of Cov Cath have been led by the Mayers, McGinness, Coldiron, Butler, Pike. Any of those level of players in the pipeline?

With all due respect, that is preposterous. Pure and utter ridiculousness.

Good luck to the Colonels and Beechwood the rest of the season!

I agree with the reasons given to continue this game. However I think there’s just one more reason as important as those given. Financially where would Beachwood find an opponent that will bring in $15-$20,000 every other year into their programs? There is no other opponent in Northern Kentucky that could guarantee such a gate.

I don't see how that's preposterous at all. 38-20 would be the closest score since the 2015 series when CovCath won 41-21. And CovCath was really bad that year.

They are very senior dominated every year with Eddie-most guys the last two seasons did not play much except in running clock time. That will continue next year as well, but there will be more Juniors than usual starting.

True, but here is my main point. Who are the underclass next level studs that the team will be built around? Go back two years and a good number of the starting impact players that made up arguably the best team ever for CCH were underclassmen. Michael Mayer, Jack Coldiron, Jacob Shriver were hugely impactful players on that team and were all underclassmen. Last year it was underclassmen Jacob, Mayer and Felix. This year it is who? Jacob and who else? That is the trend I am seeing. It doesn't mean CCH will not be a top team. To me it does mean this - last year's team was not as good as the one two years ago, this year's team is not as good as last year's and next year's will not be as good as this year's.

Just seeing this-lets just save this for the offseason as it sounds like a good thread, and it is almost Friday.

One more point, because I hear this concern often from people who ask why play this game. No injuries in this game for Beechwood.

Not true grasshopper. But BW does what BW does, next man up.......

JV game was CCH 13, BW 7. So there’s that to support. CCH was nowhere close to dominate in that one. I was there.

This series should even out next couple years. All I’m saying.

Which Beechwood player was injured playing Cov Cath?

It will not.

Sorry to hear that. I didn't see anything except a couple people with cramps. There sure did not appear to be anyone with anything serious, or that could be attributed to it being because of playing Covington Catholic. Whoever got hurt must have been able to get off the field on their own. Hopefully nothing serious and they return soon.

Like several others, curious who was injured from Beechwood? Do tell...
