An elementary school in Lincoln County is the Aviators.

 

Highland Aviators! I've often wondered why they chose that nickname.

I once watched a televised Illinois high school basketball game between the Cornjumpers and the Wooden Shoes.

 

Did the winner get to play the Centralia Orphans?Or if it was girls basketball, the Centralia Annies?

 

 

By the way, the "Annies" logo is atrocious! :lol2:

Both of my kids went there and I still don’t know how the name came about.

Raceland's mascot (Rams) was originally the "Ramblers" due to the fact the school did not have a home football field or basketball court, so all their games were played on the road - Rambling. Years later, the school built a gymnasium and football stadium, the name was then shortened to the "Rams".

Greenup County was a consolidation of three independent schools (Wurtland High School, Greenup High School and McKell High School) and the mascot, Musketeers, was chosen in reference to "The Three Musketeers" representing the "three schools".

Somerset are the only Briar Jumpers in the nation, can't get more unique than that.

 

I always heard that was the case for the Bracken Polar Bears also, but it seems like that name would come up in Alaska and other cold-weather states some.

 

I love the story about how Somerset became the Briar Jumpers. Love that rabbit mascot.

It appears that in the state of Kentucky, SHAMROCKS is quite unique.

I think it was a state championship game.

 

That being said, I will reiterate the most gender-conflicted mascot of any nearby school that I can think of. The Lady G-Men of Georgetown Ohio.

Probably because The Wildcats sounds much more imposing than The Poodles.
