If it is the head coach mailing it in it should be obvious. If it is any assistants the head coach should fire them immediately.

One of my good friends is an assistant coach in the area and one of his focal points is not asking a player to do something he isn’t willing to do in terms of effort, discipline etc.

 

A coach should always give it 100%. Even if they have mailed it in, they must remain loyal and strong for their players.

How is that motivating? Who would be motivated by that? Players who expect playing time and aren't working hard enough? (red flag) If the players you are counting on to play and lead need that motivation and/or aren't working hard enough, that is a problem.

 

I see that as more of a throwing down the gauntlet - get in here with the right attitude and work hard or get out. Yes, that is a culture change. Changing a culture that isn't working.

 

Different strokes for different folks, not every athlete is motivated the same way. For some though, this type of thing can certainly motivate.

I’ve seen coaches putting something similar on twitter. I think their just sending the overall / in general message that accountability is built into the process.....guys unwilling to work now shouldn’t be surprised to find themselves on the bench in the fall. Just a more creative way to send a very old message.

At the same time, whether it’s a meme or quote or not , as a parent of a Freshman Bred, I love it! Hold my son accountable. These are things I tell him daily about sports, or school work, or household duties, or life etc. Do your part before you expect the rewards from it.

 

I will also say I’ve heard nothing but good reports from the Breds off season program. Every player who isn’t in a spring sport and even some who are have been getting after it.

Those are the ones that have failed to meet their responsibilities. Most band directors will say that form of discipline works.

That's not necessarily true.

Maybe not for some (larger bands can have extras and they seem to stand at parade rest in the endzone ) while those being disciplined at most competitions I have regularly followed for 12 years seem to be about 10 yards off field about the 40 standing at attention. The band parents know what is happening and more often than not why.

Bingo. Unchecked Good ole boy clubs can be detrimental to a team.
