N Ky Football Coaches Awards

but for Popham and perhaps others to miss out on a chance to be on the All-State team, to me, would be a huge deal

Especially if some of the big time colleges start and stop their searches with the All-State list for each state. I agree this is sad, but not the end of the world. I'm sure a state championship would soften the blow of missing out on an all-state individual award.

I don't think the kids care that much about the coaches' team or the NKAC team; but for Popham and perhaps others to miss out on a chance to be on the All-State team, to me, would be a huge deal. That's the real shame of it all.

Do you have to be nominated by this group, if you are from N. Ky, to be on the All State team selected by the coaches? If so, there were a lot of deserving players (like Popham, Flynn and Brown of CovCath.....see I'm not always a homer....and others from other schools) from N. Ky that I think are very deserving of All State honors that were not on selected by the N. Ky coaches.

Ok, maybe they didn't get recognized because the coach didn't attend the meeting. Hey, he has a busy week this week and hopefully next. I'm sure the kids, who by the way, when they get past JC, will be on thier way to state, which I feel would be much better to have the "state" recognize the entire team as STATE CHAMPS than the dozen or so standouts recognized by "Northern Kentucky " coaches. Normally, I think that I would quickly agree with you, Henry. But this meeting didn't happen yesterday. This meeting took place during the 2nd to last week of the regular season. (I think that Cov Cath played Grant County that week . . . . so . . . . . . it is what it is, I guess . . . .)

I am not bagging on Coach R. All coaches are usually pretty busy--and he may have had something come up. But--you can have an assistant take your place if need be. And--every other coach from the area was there.

So--is it a big deal? Probably not (except the all state thing, IMO). Could it be a big thing to Mom and Dad? Maybe more so. I don't know.

That's my point. If those Cov Cath players missed out due to a coach's oversight, that is awful.

I guess all I'm trying to say is the best award would be a state ring and Cov. Cath. has the opportunity to get that. I can understand that there are many players on Cov. Caths. team that should get state recognition and if that opportunity was missed because of a missed meeting by the coach than that's not great, but if these kids win state, I'm sure they will get all the recognition they deserve.

But I guess my point was there are a lot of other players from high schools besides CovCath that are also deserving for consideration. Don't you agree with that? I realize that this is just another in the many thankless jobs the head coaches do. I really do, and am generally one of the last people to ever criticize a coach on here because I appreciate all the crud and second guessing they have to deal with. But heck, I can name several on Highlands team alone (in addition to the CovCath kids that I mentioned) that are worthy for consideration as All State in my mind. Kidwell and Ashton on Highlands defensive line to name just two. And while this may seem like more homerism, how can no one on Highlands offensive line (a line that opened up a lot of those holes for Kramer, who is very worthy of consideration, and resulted in Highlands averaging over 300 yards rushing a game while playing the likes of X, Elder, DeSales and CovCath) also not get a sniff? Heck there wasn't any offensive linemen from any high school in all of N. Ky that the coaches felt worthy of being considered for all state and only one defensive linemen in all of N.Ky? Guess I don't know the game as well as I thought I did. (Opening intentionally made for Birdsfan and OldBird if you want to take it:banana:), Oh well, I'm sure the coaches did the best they could do and thanks for all that you guys do for the kids. I genuinely mean that.

I can't figure out why you're missing the point -- other than maybe you miss our days of spit'n venom. This has zero to do with whether or not there are good players at Highlands or on any other team. The point is these particular players (if I understand the situation correctly) missed out on their chance to make the All State team because their coach missed a meeting. Now if that is incorrect, someone please let me know. Your list of deserving players from other teams, while relevant to the thread, is relevant to the specific situation I was addressing in my post.
You'd think.

I guess there was an important meeting in Ohio that couldn't be missed. :madman:

Darn it! I guess I missed the Future Coaches of the GCL North meeting?

They're are always other players that deserve some consideration for all-state, but consider this. First, are those players mentioned the best among all in the state? Second, there is a reason that so few players are nominated each year. Primarily, it has to do with wanting to get those players serious consideration. It's like if I asked you to send me a list of the best players on Highlands so I could recruit them for college, and you sent me a list 30 players long. I probably wouldn't recruit any of them because of that. So the list is kept short to those the coaches feel are the most deserving. And generally, as a rule of thumb, usually 2 or 3 max players from one team.

I saw the awards in the paper and I personally disagree with them highly!

Could'nt agree with you more, but when the coaching staff of the top team in N. Ky misses the meeting and the nominating it does'nt help the end result.

Congrats to the award winners

Even if they were there, they would only get two at the most. Look... like stated above, this is how it works. There are 18 schools in NKY that play football. Each school gets one spot in the TOP 24. It is up to the coach who he puts in that spot. That leaves 6 more spots, each coach can then nominate one more player, of those players nominated for the last 6 spots, the coaches vote and the top 6 are added to the team. Thus making the TOP 24. Since each school get one spot, I would think the spot for the team that was not there was left vacant. The coach was notified he had one spot and placed his player on the list before it was released to the media.

The players of the year are nominated by the coaches for each level (I, II, III). Then the coaches, and only the coaches in that level, vote or come to a decision. If a team is not represented, then they cannot nominate anyone for that award.

Before you guys go flying off the handle about how the coaches do not know what they are doing, how about asking how the team is selected. It does not matter if a team goes 15-0, or beats every team in NKY, or wins the mythical National Championship, they are at best going to get 2 players on the TOP 24 and EVERYONE is going to get one!! :irked:

The All-State is selected by the coaches in this manner. Everyone can nominate a player or players for consideration. Thus if a coach is not there to nominate, his player(s) won't be on the list produced by the coaches association. The coaches vote and the top ten names are sent to voting members for consideration. It does not mean a player could not still be on the All-State team if his personal coach sends out information to the voters that would help his chances.

Relax, I get it, it's obvious this it's a silly way of doing things(much like the Major League's picking a player from each team for their All Star game) Just agreeing with the previous quote that it did'nt look like the 24 best players. I know how the voting works, just not agreeing with it.

Sorry next time I'll keep my opinions to myself on a message board filled with opinions

I agree and any CCH players have a great deal of pride and respect in their coach, they can see how much time he is putting in this week.

On another note, I noticed Duran Jefferson was an All-State nominee at wide receiver?? I know Duran's a great athlete, but did he even play any wide receiver?? Looking at some late season stats, I couldn't find his name anywhere. Isn't that kind of an insult to some very fine wide receivers in NKY??
