North of Traverse City on the Eastern shore of Grand Traverse Bay.

I've heard there are issues with some beaches, but the little one at the base of the steep set of stairs we had in June was still hanging on. And those heavy spring rains also made for the worst mosquito season I can ever remember up there. That's what sticks out more than the high water.

I've seen t-shirts where we typically go in the UP that basically state that the mosquito is Michigan's state bird. :lol2:

Yeah they like that joke in Minnesota too. :lol2:

I once went on a canoe trip with my dad, uncle, and cousin in the Boundary Waters on the Minnesota/Ontario border. I was 14 at the time. At the outfitters, one of the guys helping us put our packs together handed me a tennis racket. Clearly seeing the puzzled look on my face as to why we'd need a tennis racket for fishing and camping, he calmly explained "Oh, it's the best thing for swatting away the mosquitoes up in the deep woods. Big as hummingbirds." Then 15 seconds of silence at the shocked look on my face followed by booming laughter.

Leaving in a couple of days for northern Wisconsin---on a lake between Rhinelander and Minocqua, if anyone knows where they are.

I read where the Mayfly hatch was so large on Lake Erie north of Cleveland that they could see it on satellite photos. Here is a link I found with pictures:

They’re here! Photos show crazy amount of mayflies swarming cars in Catawba | fox8.com

Reminds me of that bit in The Fellowship of the Ring (the book, not the movie).

Pippin: “Midgewater. There are more midges than water.”

Sam: “What do they live on when they can’t get hobbit”?

Update.

Norway: Friggin Awesome! Once we got outside of Oslo the group stayed in the fjords area. It was one breath-taking view after the next. The Norwegians have tremendous national pride and are incredibly proud of their heritage. Flam and Bergen were a blast.

Iceland: Wish we had another day or two in Iceland. First off, outside of Reykjavik, the island is a big lava field. It's like Hawaii, but not tropical. The Blue Lagoon did not disappoint.

What did mess me up was the lack of darkness. In Norway the sun didn't really set much.... couple hours, maybe. In Iceland, you never would consider it nighttime at any point. I went nine days without seeing darkness. I felt like a reverse vampire.

We did. Took the Wildlife Loop Road around the southern end of it and saw the buffalo herds and the begging burros. But, my favorite part of the park would've been the drives on the Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road towards the north. Actually, now that I write that, I'm not sure either of those roadways are completely in Custer State Park or not. We did all three of them in one day, so it's hard to remember where the park line(s) actually ended. lol

As to the driving, I knew there'd be a lot. This was not a "sit and relax" type of vacation...this was a sightseeing vacation, and so we had to drive to see the sights.

Completely agree. We did this trip 4 years ago.
