The New Playoff System Is So Bad....

Featured Replies

The format made for a great round of action this week in 4A, but it will make for a terrible 4A championship game, likely pitting Trinity against poor Ryle. Ryle won't get within 40 points of Trinity. Yeah... great 4A playoff format.

I think you might be wrong on this one, as well as many others. I don't think their is that much of a gap in 4A this year. We'll see in the next two weeks.

Trinity probably should worry about getting past Henry Clay and Ryle getting past Henderson.

Settle down fella. That poster is a fan of a team that has already checked in their gear and moved on to B-ball. You can bet that the Rocks are focused on nothing but their visit to Lexington and facing HC. It should be another nail-biter.

You are better than that. Look at their web site. Here is the rotation Tell me when three plays 8. That's just smoke and mirrors to justify objection. From what I was told, the "draw" was only for 2006 and only to start a rotation.

The way I see it, there really are no regions anymore. The administrators, coaches, etc. had differing objectives, some wanting less travel, some wanting different pairings in rounds 3 and 4 (rotation, etc.) You can't have BOTH fixed regions and rotation of pairings in third and fourth rounds. It won't work and still meet all of their objectives.

I've seen the draw for the next two years, but I wasn't aware there was a rotation. I picked 3 vs 8 because that is the extreme as far as travel. Won't that matchup happen eventually with a rotation or draw?

The new system has produced some great matchups in the playoffs.
The old system would have produced great matchups, too ... many of them games we hadn't already seen in the regular season.

It prevents coaches from getting idea matchups from the other district and will make teams prepare harder to win that district championship, thus making better in-state products.
You want to explain that point again? I don't know what the heck you are saying.

No disrespect to Henry Clay, Ryle, or Henderson Co., but the obvious problem with the new format is the fact that Male will not be in the finals. H vs. T deserved to be the culmination of the year and not a quarterfinal game. Now I happen to feel that Henry Clay might be the third best 4A team in the state and will give T a game, but having Ryle or Henderson Co. in the finals could make for an anticlimactic blowout of a state championship.

As to the thread starter noting that games were close this past weekend, that's great! But I would rather see close games the next two weeks. If that happens then the new playoff system is fine, but I believe there will be semi-final and final games that will be a bit more lopsided than in years past. I hope I'm wrong.

Why did H vs. T DESERVE to be the culmination. Why is it that another AAAA should have to beat two out of the three big three to win state when they are all from the same city. This is ludicrous. There is nothing in the Ten Commandments or the Constitution that says that Louisville teams should be pitted on different sides of the playoff brackets. We are one of the only states in the union that have ever had more than one team out of the same city make the finals in the same class.

It just seems to me that the state final game is being force-fed a team that may be no better than the 8th or 9th best 4A team in the state. Male, St.X, Manual, the loser of the T vs. HC game, and a couple of other Lexington teams are probably all more worthy of having a state runner-up trophy to add to their trophy case (relative to the Henderson Co. / Ryle winner). I honestly do not mean to disrespect Hend. Co. or Ryle, I just think more respect should be given to these better teams (i.e. Male) who got eliminated too soon.

Many times that happens in all classes. I thought Prestonsburg in 2004 was one of the top 3 teams in the state, but they lost in the regional finals to Belfry. That is the way it goes.

Ditto Russell in 2002. They lost to Breathitt by one and Breathitt went on to kill Corbin in the finals by 50. That is the way it goes.

I don't know about Henderson, I haven't seen them play, but Ryle is a little better football team than you give them credit for. Male didn't get eliminated too soon. One team is coming out of Louisville, and it is Trinity. Colerain and Cincy St. X can't play in the state finals either. They are both in the same city. You do not set up playoff brackets by who you think is going to be better year to year, you set them up by district and region. There is no way that teams in the same city shouldn't be in the same region.

That is a very valid point that I really cannot argue. It just seems wrong that if (hypothetically speaking here) Trinity beats Ryle 54-0 in the state final game Ryle will be awarded the state runner-up trophy instead of Male, who all would agree is the second best team. I understand there is no way to fix it - I guess I just feel bad for Male more than anything.

I don't think Male is concerned with state runner up anyway, but once again, Trinity, if they play, will not beat Ryle 54-0.

Then don't have a playoff just have the 2 highest ranked teams play each other for the title. That would end all debates then.

Oh Wait! Male & X were 1 & 2 they should be playing each

other in the finals right.

Hey we could have the rest of the teams just play bowls games you get to pick your match-up.

I would like to see Ryle vs. Trinity in the "Gold Star Chili Bowl".

The winner could chant we are #3.

My back-up games if I can't get those 2 to agree on which invite they would accept. Are HC vs. Ryle, HC vs. Henderson County, or Trinity vs. Henderson.

The battle for THIRD best!:thumb:

My bad I guess there would have to be a third place tie between the 2 bowl game winners.

Darn I almost had it figured out.Sorry!
